The topic of your dissertation will determine what your life is going to look like for the next months and years, so you must choose wisely. Here are some questions I have for you:

In which of these areas have you already done research?
In which of these areas are you especially well-read already?
In which of these areas are you most interested?
In which of these areas do you hope to work or teach in the future?
What are the requirements of your program concerning the dissertation?
Is there an ongoing research project at your institution that you could join in order to obtain data in exchange for your labor on the collective project?

What is the area of expertise of your faculty adviser?

In which of these areas are you most interested?

This would seem to be the most important one, since you seem to already have made it into your program. What do you want to work on, bearing in mind that this is likely the final step in your transition from student to professional?

Awesome, Mayank! I'm glad you were here. This is not a subject I am good at.

However, i want to ask Shazia: Are you sure you are studying what you want to study? You are not supposed to have to brainstorm research ideas. You are supposed to have lots of research ideas because they are interesting to you. It is supposed to be like this:

You become passionate about a field of study, and you want to research lots of aspects of it. Therefore, you enter a graduate program to master the field.

If you are in the program but have no ideas, you might not be passionate about this field. I hope you don't mind me challenging you this way.

Do the topics suggested by Mayank help you?

You have to have some kind of interest! What is your interest? If you are going to get this advanced degree, it should be because you have a particular interest.

Here is your homework:
1.) Start by writing a paragraph about some philosopher whose work you admire.
2.) Read 3 recent masters thesis papers by people who have earned philosophy degrees. You will see that they found a way to contribute a NEW idea based on EXISTING ideas.

:-)

If you really just want examples of thesis statements, you can google this: philosophy, "thesis paper", examples, list.
One of the reasons is that the essay-writer doesn't express clearly its position on the topic.
Another important reason is that many people confuse an essay with an informative text. In an essay you must write and support your own opinion.
