You're at the PhD level, and you can't think of a topic at all? You have no ideas? Nothing about the entire field interests you enough to consider writing about it? Possibly you're in the wrong field . . .

In any event, do some research in your field, read up on the latest theories and trends, then create a short list of possible topics that you think you'd like to write on. Then, if you post the list here, and give us something to work with, maybe we can help you.

Have a look at our suggestions to other (allegedly) PhD level students who have posted similarly uninformed requests for dissertation topics. In short: Study your field, talk to your adviser, brainstorm, then post ideas or at least broad topics here for feedback and help in making the final decision about what topic to spend months or years of your life researching.

Need to decide on topic of dissertation in Retail Management

Hey guys, new here, came across the form when googling to try and find some ideas for my dissertation topic.

The dissertation needs to be retail related, I'm narrowing that down to grocery retail as I have no real interest in fashion retailing.

The first area I am thinking about looking at supermarket own brands and sub-brands e.g. Value, Standard, Premium and consumer perceptions of them.

It's commonly accepted that supermarkets have created these sub brands to appeal to different types of consumer but can consumers be put into one of these three categories or is their choice of sub-brand effected by perceived social risk, amongst other factors, e.g. a customer buying a bottle of wine for their own consumption may choose a supermarket own brand wine but if they were buying it to share with friends would they instead choose a manufacturer brand. How has the current economic climate impacted upon consumer perceptions of supermarket own brands.

Another area I've considered Is looking at the loyalty schemes, their effectiveness, are consumers really loyal to one supermarket (most people have loyalty cards for a number of stores), how Tesco's Clubcard has fueled the companies massive expansion and success.

Sorry for this mess above, this is what my mind feels like just now, having trouble narrowing my thoughts and ideas down to some final topics to take to my tutor, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hey guys, new here, came across the form when googling to try and find some ideas for my dissertation topic.

^Hello there :)

Sorry for this mess above, this is what my mind feels like just now, having trouble narrowing my thoughts and ideas down to some final topics to take to my tutor, any help would be appreciated.

^Well, these are topics of YOUR interest. What people may find interesting, may not have any appeal to you, for example, fashion retailing.

In regards to your, personal statement, there are a number of grammatical errors and you discuss points that the general reader may have known before hand; you are not discussing anything new or anything that interests you in particular to the point that youd like to do a PHD program on it.

Just think about what it is youd like to study, and why youd like to study it. Then express these thoughts in clear and efficient writing that conveys your interest.

Well, these are topics of YOUR interest.

Right. And when choosing a dissertation topic it is essential to choose a topic of true interest to oneself. Otherwise, one will be at risk of dropping the project mid-stream due to disinterest. I heard somewhere that as many as half of all PhD students never get their doctorates specifically because they do not finish their dissertations.

If you are a PhD student at the point of beginning your dissertation research, you must have some idea what you would like to study. To get ideas of the kinds of topics typically researched by students at your school, go to the library and browse the section where all of the dissertations are housed. You might also ask your adviser for a list of the titles of the dissertations of recent graduates.

Once you have a topic and have conceived how you are going to research that topic, we can help you with the process of writing your prospectus and, eventually, your dissertation. But any ideas we, who are not expert in your field, might have about topics would not be particularly useful to you.

Okay, let's get started, Slims. Do some writing, and maybe people can help you improve your ideas. If you have a question about how to get started I can give you advice, but you have to put in more effort than this! :-)

Try to get interested in it. This stuff is your life. I mean... you know, take the mundane along with the exciting.
