Hi :) That is a tough subject to write about. You need to choose an argument, something you feel strongly about, and something that will have many aspects to discuss. Maybe choose something that is currently in the news, or is controversial (recently I read about the severance of the Susan G Koman and Planned Parenthood) or something that is a major issue in the medical field. Sometimes it helps to gather the information to support the argument first, then create a thesis that sums up everything that you are writing about. Then just do lots of research and use examples to back up your thesis, once it is established. Maybe you could address the issue of how so many people do not have access to health insurance? It sounds like a challenge to write on this subject, so I wish you luck! When you have anything written, even just ideas or a rough draft- post it in a new thread, there are many people who are willing to review it for you! :)

HI Claudia,
Sounds like an interesting topic. Your approach will depend on whether you want to treat the topic from a practical or theoretical perspective. An interesting theoretical approach would be to question standard assumptions about the role of the interpreter as a neutral "translator". Instead you could argue that the interpreter should play a more active role by providing emotional support to the patient and also advocating on behalf of the patient when appropriate. The National Standard Guide for Community Interpreting Services contains a discussion of the Ethical Responsibilities of community medical interpreters that could inform part of your discussion. Let me know if you would like any further help as I have written a number of papers in nursing and health sciences am very familiar with this material. Best of luck with your assignment.

Klaudia,

As community interpreters are considered professionals, they have an ethical code, laws and regulations, and continuing education to follow. Sometimes they are paid, and sometimes they aren't.

Potential issues:

How should community interpreters be compensated?

What to do if there are no community interpreters qualified for certain conditions?

What's the best way of training or identifying community interpreters in the population?

Is the continuing education requirement in your state enough? Why?

What laws need to be revised or changed? Why?

Find medical malpractice suits with the interpreter or lack of interpreter as the cause of injury. Examine them for a common thread.

What's the best way to recruit?

Thank You all for your suggestion. It will certainly help me during my writing, however right now I do not have much time to study on it , because I've got the exam session. I'll let you know how my thesis paper progresses and maybe you will help me to discuss it. Thanks again. and hope to hear you soon. All the best!

Hi everyone!
Finally i've got some details about my BA paper and I mean that I've got outline - quality in community interpreting. My Professor told me to focus on history of community interpreters training and their syllabus( why they need the interpreter, why is it important and so on). What do think about it?? Any ideas? I've got some books such as S.B. Hale '' community interpreting in the medical context'' (chapter II, 2007) , Roberts, Roda. "Community Interpreting Today and Tomorrow," and some more. However, I have to put it all together to write something logical and in academic level , and to be honest this ''academic writing'' is the hardest thing to do. . . but I'm trying to do my best.
