What are good methods for reducing footnotes?

I often find I need to footnote many times per paragraph (almost every sentence) or cite several sources for one sentence. This seems excessive, but I've read it's better to err on the side of caution. Therefore, I was wondering if rewriting or rewording an essay is an efficient way to consolidate footnotes, or if there are any other good methods for reducing footnotes?

Without looking at anything of yours specifically, I would say you should do some research on the subject, can be as simple as a Google search, and just make sure you are doing things properly. As you have stated it, it does sound like it may be a bit excessive, but without seeing a specific example it's hard to say for sure. Don't be shy about posting the essay in question that you're working on so we can see what the issue is if any. If there is a problem, we may be able to help you with re-editing if need be.
