So far we've looked at different forms of poetry and different methods of criticism. The whole class is dedicated to taking a poem and analyzing its form and messages.

We've studied essays such as:
Criticism Inc. by John Crowe Ransom
The Well Wrought Urn, Heresy of Paraphrase
And Preface to the Lyrical Ballads by Wiliam Wordsworth

We've read poems by Shakespeare, John Milton, and John Keats.

We've discussed ideas such as humanism, dignity, Enlightenment, and countryside vs. city. We've also thought about things like, "what is this poet worried about?"

I'm just wondering if anyone has an interesting idea for a 2000 word essay. I have a few options but I would like to hear some other thoughts.

Thank you!

Hi,

I've studied poetry and made a research about Apollinaire - French famous modern poet - when I was in high school. My research was about "The modern city in the XXth century : Guillaume Apollinaire and Edward Hopper. I've made a comparison between poetry and paint, they both exalted the modern city, industries, but also the depression, solitude.

The two main texts are : Zone and Le Pont Mirabeau. This main subject is modern city but the text is also modern, a new way to write, inspired of cubism paint, time and space have no signification, critic of the religion, no punctuation.

Baudelaire is also quite famous but harder and more in the classicism. I'd like to share my study but there is written in French. I don't even know if you can translate correctly these poems with the rhymes.

Good luck.
