European Masters in Social Work with Families and Children

MOTIVATION LETTER

With relevant experience and education in the field of development and social work, I am Smriti from Nepal writing with tremendous enthusiasm for enrolling in European Masters in Social Work with Family and Children as I seek to leverage my knowledge on the same and work in the related field.

Nepalese have always been exposed to the belief that Nepal is developmentally unprogressive; I myself have even contemplated the reasons behind what keeps Nepal from advancing forward. After high school, I learnt of Development studies and it interested me from that point onwards. In 2010, I joined National College for Development Studies. I undertook Sociology, Economics, Sustainable Development, Society & Culture and other overlapping subjects. I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Development studies in 2014 with outstanding grades. Developmental studies encouraged me to realize everything in this world is inter-related, the world started to make more sense to me. During my study, I visited many parts of Nepal including many rural areas where I learned about the way of life there. I was part of a team that conducted field based research, data collections and surveys. What I witnessed made me think a lot about the hardship of people, homeless children, poor families and their struggle to meet even their basic needs. Nepal is still back in time, limited in its own universe by constrains of internal and external forces which need to be overcome.

I also volunteered for the Organization for Community Child and Environment Development (OCCED) Nepal. OCCED is an orphanage home which works for the protection of children and environment. I was very content to be able to give guidance to the children. For my final year, I completed a project on livelihood of particular groups of people, who were involved in making Cadies out of typical fruit in Nepal; Lapsi (Choerospondias axillaris). This study gave me an insight into life of these people. Families making business out of this were found living a good life but many people are missing out this opportunity. This fruit has a lot of prospect in Nepalese economy. I realized that natural resource is important assets to any Nation and a country need to form economic policies inducing the sustainable use of natural resources.

With the completion of my studies, I decided to volunteer for three months with Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO); a UK based non-governmental organization working in developing countries to fight poverty. During my stay in a rural host home, I observed that families from Nagarkoti caste (a minority ethnic community) are very vulnerable. These families were poor; the children were deprived of basic living conditions and most importantly they lacked access to inclusive participation in the community. I am willing to figure how the status of such families can be enhanced. My involvement in Women Lead Nepal as an executive intern helped me recognize the actual potential females have. Working with an organization aiming to achieve professional advancement and leadership development for young women in Nepal, I learnt how inclusion and participation of Women serves as a catalyst to bring prosperity to the family and the whole nation.

In my country, recent earthquake in April 2015, has threatened the well-being of many families. I witnessed this first hand as this occurred during my time working in rural areas. Natural disasters like these have often proved to make people even more vulnerable in all parts of the world.

With my knowledge I have come to understand that Family is the most important institution. I think it is crucial to learn more about Families and Children. Only a better understanding will lead to make right approaches towards problems. Everything that a child learns and receives at early age shapes them which ultimately shape the family and their future. Therefore I feel it incredibly important to invest in children. However, many children, adolescences and women are left out in development progress.

Families are deprived of their own right, which causes diminishment of their potential. This deprivation also causes the conditions to remain the same in next generation which then becomes a vicious cycle.

While poverty, gender, ethnicity, education, poor health, nutrition, safe water, natural disasters and migration are some driving forces to most problems in developing countries, I am interested in learning about these factors and many other unnoticed causes which leads to the vulnerability In Nepal and other parts of the world.

While I think my education has helped me understand to a better extent about the problems in Nepalese community and world, I am however looking forward to increase my skill set. And I am hopeful that my enhanced understanding of familial relations and children would help the society itself to live in harmony. This vision of mine highly collides with the vision of this program. European Maters in Social Work with Families and Children would be an amazing opportunity. It is an inspiring international platform I am really looking forward to be a part of. This unique program would give me such an exciting chance to learn new things in a cross cultural and comparative view with a global perspective. I would also be able to observe and get depth understanding of successful development models adopted by many countries to bring progress. To be surrounded by others from different backgrounds, with varied levels of experience and knowledge would put me in such a fantastic position to learn and absorb as much information as possible, and give me the opportunity to share my knowledge with others too.

Learning different approaches, concepts and framework would allow me to apply these techniques in the future. I aim to work for societies, children and families and bring positive outcome. With this course, I would be even more capable to work in this field and serve as quality manpower in my country and elsewhere.

Thank you for taking time to consider my application.

Smriti, this is an overly informative essay. I have to say that you have told an extremely compelling tale of the plight of women and children in Nepal. The only problem is, you did not clearly indicate what the main motivation for your interest in a masters degree is. You only gave an autobiography for yourself but you did not satisfy the main requirements of the motivational letter. So you have to delete this letter and write a new one that is better suited to the requirements of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship motivation letter. How will you do that?

Give a history of and a description of your current profession. Explain what you see as an area of immediate concern in this particular field. Describe how this motivated you to pursue higher learning. These are the information for your first paragraph and the foundation of your motivation.

The second paragraph, should explain why you have chosen a particular program in relation to your application. How does this relate to your motivational concerns? Describe how you see this course helping you create a better response to the pressing problems of this field. Be specific about the courses, training programs, and other information that will relate your masters course to your current or future profession.

For the third paragraph, you need to get specific about the qualities that you can bring to the program in terms of your personal traits, community interests, social activities, and other similar discussions. This is the part where you can mention some specifics that you feel help you stand out as a person among your peers or what they admire about you which you think will help to improve program.

By the 4th paragraph, you should be able to explain how your academic and professional background has prepared you to become the perfect candidate for your chosen masters course. What course did you study in college? Were there any notable accomplishments that you had during that time? Did you take the lead on any academic or professional projects that would tie in with your perceived abilities as required by this course?

Think long and hard about what special traits you have as a person and as a student for the final paragraph. Make sure to highlight your strongest personal points and skills either as a professional, friend, family member, or all of the 3. This is your chance to make sure that you allow yourself to stand out from the other applicants so make sure that you utilize this paragraph to the best of your abilities.

After you have accurately presented the above information, then you can close the letter on a hopeful note. One that indicates an excitement at the opportunity of becoming a part of such a prestigious scholarship program.
