This is my draft for my application to Barcelona GSE. English is not my native langue so there should be some grammatical errors.
The admission office requires a letter of motivation no longer than 700 words.
Any comment will be highly appreciated!
My first day as an undergraduate student of Economics was crucial to my life. During the introductory lesson in Mathematics, the professor made a charismatic speech which especially attracted my attention. In that moment discovered my dream profession - an academic economist.
For the following two years I read many economics books in order to learn more about the science. However, eventually I found out that reading is not enough for a true scholar, as he has to be involved in extracurricular activities such as educating and making scientific discoveries. Therefore I accepted the opportunity to work at my university as a teaching assistant in the same Introductory to Mathematics class, which helped me develop my educational skills. More importantly, at the same time I got an internship at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts(MASA). There, under the mentorship of academic Ljupco Kocarev and his excellent team, I learned about mathematical modeling of Electricity Markets. Even though there are many different types of modeling, I mainly worked on implementing econometric models to predict the price of electricity, which were ultimately used in my bachelor thesis. After getting my bachelor degree in Economics with major in Finance, I continued to research at MASA, but on different project. Now I combine econometrics with network science to analyze the economic growth of countries.
In the future, my interest is to focus on the empirical analysis of the economic laws mainly by using tools developed in econometrics. The research of electricity markets left me a few open questions. To answer them I have to gain a deeper understanding of the economic theories. Therefore, with the master studies in Economics I not only aim to upgrade my econometric skills so I can improve the present electricity market models, but also gain knowledge to apply them to other markets, such as the financial market. Furthermore, I want to approach market modeling multidisciplinary by combining my acquired knowledge in economics with someone's expertise in network science. The current project in MASA has left me captivated by the ability of many different measures, that were constructed through the eyes of a network scientist, to predict economic phenomena. Just look at the collaboration of the economist Ricardo Hausmann and the network scientist Cesar Hidalgo which produced the term Economic Complexity. Their indicator is one of the best predictors of economic growth and it shows how fascinating results can be produced by combining economics with other sciences.
But why exactly Barcelona GSE? Some of my friends may say that I am biased towards the school since I'm a big fan of FC Barcelona. But the decision for my application is based on a thorough examination of many different graduate programs. First and foremost I was attracted by Barcelona GSE because, unlike other universities, it emphasizes the need for mathematical knowledge in order to thrive as an economist. I am much more motivated by the quality of the faculty. As Isaac Newton once said: to see further, a person has to stand on the shoulders of giants, and I want to stand on the shoulders of the professors at Barcelona GSE. In that way I can develop my skills in economics, and one day discover something that will change the course in the field of economic modeling. Moreover I argue that the students have to be complementary to the professors. Once, or more precisely in the afternoon of 10th April 2015, I had the opportunity to visit the Barcelona GSE campus. I was enthralled how the students individually organized seminars to share their knowledge. I am sure if I am given the opportunity to study at your university the environment will bring the best out of me.
After graduation, I desire to continue to PhD studies. Through them I will continue towards the realization of my final goal of becoming an academic economist. Thus, one day I will be the giant and students will stand on my shoulders.
