Hi all, I am writing a 300-500 word essay about my professional goals of becoming a Nurse Practitioner (this is an MS program for people who are non-nurses but hold a BA/BS in another field). It is a very competitive program and I'm concerned about perfecting my essay...only, I've rewritten it so many times I need a fresh perspective! I would love to hear about areas I could strengthen, or opinions about what the school may be looking for in the essay. Thanks!
As a native Mainer, I have adopted the mentality that all things worthwhile require hard work. Growing up on the rocky, briny coast taught that lobster shells must be cracked, fiddleheads must be plucked from their bristly nest in the cold spring earth, and blueberries are easier picked when you are young and closer to the ground. Maine is a difficult state, but not without rewards. Becoming a Nurse Practitioner through USM's options program will also prove challenging and intense, with the lifelong reward of a career that has meaning and value to me.
My professional goal is to become the most effective clinician I can be. This means having the professional latitude to diagnose, prescribe, and manage the overall care of a patient. It also means having a strong skill set that will remain relevant and adaptable in the changing market of healthcare (as mid-level practitioners rise and the number of physicians staffed decrease). As someone who is driven to manage and multitask I am drawn to the autonomy and independence that a nurse practitioner is granted. I thrive in situations that require leadership.
I would like to promote a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on prevention and education. The concept of the "patient" is so much more complex than someone with an illness to be treated. A patient is a multifaceted person that has unique needs. The holistic approach treats the whole person and promotes optimal lifelong health. Specifically I would like to bring this holistic approach to working within the scope of women's health. It is a field I have a strong educational background in (Women's Studies at American University), as well as currently work in as a clinical administrator. I am strongly committed to making a positive difference in women's lives.
Working in the healthcare field is a privilege and an honor. It requires hard work, innate intelligence, compassion, and follow through. I am an adult with practical life experience behind me. I am capable, and confident that my life skills have given me the training necessary to succeed in almost any situation. I have achieved a leadership position in every job I have taken. I am someone who enjoys working out problems, is a strong leader, and someone who brings intensity and dedication to their work.
My work and education thus far has helped me define who I am, and who I would like to become. Participating in the options program would be a wonderful experience that would allow me to reach my goals efficiently and expediently. My strengths lie in my character; I am a positive and confident person. I work hard and believe in honesty, integrity and most importantly, a healthy, well lived life. I look forward to working in Maine, where preventative medicine can be so helpful. Acceptance into this program would be an incredibly meaningful opportunity.
