state- of-the-art areas in communication Technology; SoP for PhD- Wireless Communication

My SoP is a bit lengthy. I want suggestion where to cut down or if there is anything to include more.

I hope to pursue a PhD degree with an emphasis in research in Wireless Communication at XXXX University under Wireless Group. Having a research based teaching professional career for the past three (3) years, I have learned research methodology, theories of communications, and signal processing, which I like to apply in future study. At this time, however, I wish to continue my research in the application of mathematical and statistical theories for further exploring signal theory to solve many sophisticated signal processing problems.

My academic career made me study all the basics and theory of communications technology once again, which gave me a good visualization power in the critical areas of the communication environments like communication channel modeling, coding theory, multiplexing techniques etc. So, I have intended my mind to go for a research oriented degree and going for a PhD is the best option, under supervision of the forerunner who thrives well in research, since it would not only give me a details insight to the subjects of my interest but also improve my chances of future technical growth.

From high school days, I felt strong inclination towards Mathematics and Physics which always kept me the as top-scorer in the class. This fondness led me to choose Engineering as my carrier. I enrolled in one of the top Electrical Engineering schools in town, XXXX, securing 3rd position in the combined admission test. During my third year of bachelor studies, I dragged towards the course Communication theory and chose Communication as my major, which further contributed getting highest grade A+ (>80%) in all major courses like Digital Communication, Optical Fiber Communication, Mobile and Cellular Communication, Microwave Engineering, Computer network and Data Communication, and thus proceed being honored with merit based prestigious "Dean List Award", the highest honor of the institute, for achieving a GPA of 3.78 in the year 2008-2009, given only to seven undergraduate students on the graduation ceremony. My thesis supervisor, one of the pioneers in installing Fiber Optic Cables in Bangladesh, helped to discover my inner potential towards research work. My undergraduate thesis, entitled "Performance analysis of optical fiber link using optical amplifier in cascade for WDM system" was meant to combat the effect of crosstalk that arise in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing system, where, cascaded optical amplifier showed a improvement in Bit Error Rate (BER) and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), compared to any single amplifier of high gain.

After receiving bachelor degree, I had extreme desire to go forth and explore the world of communication. This led me choosing Australian National University, one of the top Engineering school in the world, which secures a prestigious rank especially for its outstanding research activities. There, I earned Masters of Engineering with specialization in Wireless Communication and Error Correction Coding. I came in touch with skilled Faculty members and well-equipped labs which played a great role to enhance my knowledge. My Masters project, entitled "Receiver design for OFDM system", was the combined output of my hard work and continuous support from my supervisor, which dealt with the non-ideal transmission conditions i.e carrier frequency offset, sampling clock frequency and specially, timing synchronization error, for which receiver suffers most to find symbol boundaries to avoid Inter symbol interference (ISI) and Inter channel interference (ICI). To combat this situation, timing estimation was used where correlation between parts of the samples took place. The mean of the proposed timing metric trajectory peak was at the exact timing point for AWGN channel; however, it was slightly shifted due to dispersion under multi-path fading channel.

After completing my Masters, I made my mind up to choose academia as my career and joined one of the Leading Technical University in Dhaka, University of Information and Technology, in the department Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE). In the early days of my teaching career, I started teaching the course "Digital Signal Processing", thus achieved a clear idea about the application of signal processing on wireless communication. Some of my publication, specially, experimenting wavelet denoising using Wiener filter worth mentioning, which showed that the joint use of Wiener filter in modified Fourth order moment based wavelet denoising provides about 12% better BER performance than that of modified Fourth order moment based denoising, through AWGN channel, and even under fading condition. In my another work, stability, misadjustment, and convergence performance of the Wavelet Transform (WT) domain is analyzed using least mean square (LMS) Newton adaptive filtering algorithm with first order and second order autoregressive (AR) process.

Recently I have concentrated back in the core area of Wireless Communication and started working on multi-antenna system. One of my paper is under review where I tried to analyze the performance of Diversity combiner under Rayleigh and Ricean Fading condition using different modulation scheme i.e BPSK, QPSK and QAM.

Besides my personal research enhancement, I was an active member of "Project Evaluation Committee" and supervised a number of undergraduate thesis. Besides that I was involved with administrative works also like preparing class routine and exam roaster, even the new updated course curriculum of this institute prepared under my supervision.

While pursuing my Master's project I came to know the immense potential behind the multiplexing technique of OFDM. In addition, with my recent interest about multi-antenna system, I have an intuition that there are lot of options either unexplored or under developed in the research arena of OFMD and MIMO. I have a research plan related to MIMO-OFDM. I would like to explore the modeling of MIMO-OFDM system along with spread spectrum in order to maximize the benefits of both the multiplexing system using frequency, time and antenna diversity techniques. The combination of MIMO and OFDM has the potential of providing high data rate through challenging channel, since MIMO can boost the capacity and the diversity and OFDM can mitigate the detrimental effects due to multipath fading. Earlier research on MIMO systems has focused either on extracting the maximal diversity gain or the maximal spatial multiplexing gain of a channel. Group detection was shown to play a key role in designing schemes that achieve optimal diversity-multiplexing trade-off.

Space time (ST) coding is a powerful scheme that combines coding with transmit diversity to achieve high diversity performance in wireless systems. A special case of ST trellis coding is delay diversity (DD). One problem of ST trellis coding is that the decoding complexity increases exponentially as a function of the diversity level and transmission rate. Orthogonal ST block code (OSTBC) design can address this problem by achieving both multipath diversity and space diversity. Orthogonal ST-coded OFDM has a simple implementation that can provide a minimal decoding complexity, but cannot achieve multipath diversity nor high rate. On the other hand, SF-coded OFDM with signal space diversity technique can achieve the maximum diversity and full rate over multipath fading channels, at the expense of a high decoding complexity.

As one of the promising multiple access techniques in future 4G wireless communications, OFDMA has been shown to provide much flexibility in resource allocation and robustness to multipath fading. Unlike point-to point MIMO-OFDM systems where the coding across transmit antennas is possible, coding across a group of uncoordinated users is generally impractical

In course of keeping myself updated with the research activities in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the XXXX University, I read the research publications available through the web pages of the faculty members. I got fascinated with the research activities, particularly, I found my future research interests are extremely well aligned with that of Dr. YY of Wireless Group. While an opportunity to work on the above stated topic will be a privilege for me, I am open to explore other newer realm within the framework of my general interest in Wireless Communication.

XXXX University maintains a prestigious position because of its highly equipped research facilities, World-renowned faculty, freedom of research thinking, flexibility and diversity of the graduate program in world ranking. Moreover, the Wireless Lab is my first choice because I believe that the PhD program in the Lab fits my academic needs and professional goals. My recent research idea gives further strength and motivates to pursue a PhD degree from the University because it is the place with best opportunities to develop and implement my ideas in a practical way. If I am admitted in the research group, I would like to concentrate my research MIMO-OFDM based 4G Wireless Technologies. My research experiences prove that I am able to quickly adapt to new topics and become a competent researcher. Consequently, I would also love to research in other related areas.

After Completion of PhD program I would like to join my present work place in my home country to share my knowledge through career in academia, because I have found the acute shortage of PhD degree holder faculty member here. One more reason is that, due to lack of research facility in my country, graduates are forced to choose abroad. So, I also hope that someday I would be able to set up an excellent communication research institute in Dhaka, so as our future generation can produce quality research staying at home. I truly believe that getting admission and scholarship in XXXX University will take me a step ahead in achieving my goals.

My solid research background, excellent Computer simulation skills and self research planning ability will succeed as a PhD candidate in your program to make significant achievement in this field of study.

Yes.... I too feel so.
You have lots of opportunities in other sections of your application to talk about your credentials and achievements. So SOP is not the place for you to list down all details of them. You can cut down a lot on such descriptions here. SOP should be aimed at letting them know you as a person - your interest in the field, how it developed and what you did to pursue you passion, what your future goals and dreams, and how this program help you achieve them. Be creative in SOP as it would be the one that they would understand you as a person.
