Undergraduate / Father's love is deep and silent, and always there it is; he influenced me [3]

...and explain how and why this person is import to you.

When I search my mind for who has made an impact on my life, my father steps out first. I am really surprised at the truth, for my love for my father is so complex.

To be honest, my father is not an ideal dad because he can be defined as a workaholic without doubt. Since I had a memory he has been operating like a machine for days and nights. As a famous teacher and the boss of an training institute, his schedule is filled up with lectures to give and decisions to made on management. It was he who left me weeping alone behind a locked door when I was 5 years old, who never showed up in parents meetings, and who never took me to fly a kite or play basketball. It is forever regret that I missed so much experience for children and I therefore see him as a untypical father although I am reluctant to affix the label of incompetence to him. In adolescent years I could not help yelling at him and rarely followed his words on anything. When I got matured, I still find it tough to communicate with him, for neither of us could find enough words and topics to say.

While I believe I won't forgive my dad in some parts, I deeply understand him and even feel sympathetic of him. He was delayed for 7 years into high school because of the Cultural Revolution, but his diligence and perseverance supported him past 3 times of college entrance exam, brought him a diploma of a key university, a job in a big city and his enterprise. I know his ambition propels him to work while his lack of activities in early years left him nothing to do if he rests at home. His single-parent background and his childhood with his grandma hold him back from taking the father's role in the best way and showing his love to his innocent son. But I do know he loves me so much.

After I failed the college entrance exam, he comforted me to take it easy, for a text is only a text, and encouraged me that to be confident and optimistic I will succeed next time. In that summer, he got up early in spare mornings, take a stroll with me in the park, telling me his story of fighting against fate. During the Spring Festival when he had his leg broken and recovered at home, we read and write in the same room where we chatted for a long time. When he stood at the window, watching me lighting fireworks outside, smiling, I said to myself it was such a wonderful moment, the first time we were so close to each other for almost 10 years.

Love is to care, to understand, and to inherit. Father's love is deep and silent, and always there it is. He instructs me unyieldingness, loyalty, perseverance, and love of a man, to whom the best inheritance in terms of a father is not to let my children miss what I missed.

any advices will be welcomed!

Undergraduate / Democracy itself guarantees the right to express; ISSUE OF IMPORTANCE [4]

..the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope-and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your country, and your generation.

Democracy is based on availability to express different ideas and democracy itself guarantees the right to express.

In modern China who has experienced rapid development for 30 years, with the appearance of social differentiation and emancipation of individual character, contradiction of different opinions becomes inevitable, while the whole society is stepping into an era of multiplication. A Greek philosopher once said, "In argument, truth is born." The argument forces each side to look inwards with a better understanding of what they share and where they dispute, while win or lose will be judged by the mass. Freedom of expressing helps make fair public policies for maximized social benefits. Beyond doubt, democracy is not only one of the essential principles of solving problems but a driving influence of sustainable development as well.

As for my own reason to appreciate democracy, my deep interest in understanding the universe includes an objective knowledge of the society, whose diversification keeps splendid in my heart. I have friends who left campus in last June and got a job in Google with a salary of 200,000 Yuan, and I also have friends as computer salesmen who never got a high school diploma---all of them are hard working; I have encountered a 18-year-old girl who services in the airport while my classmate still behave like a little girl-both are happy and optimistic; I read blogs of public figures and completely strangers-all their lives are challenging but colorful. When I get on a subway train and encounter people who speak with different accents, wear different clothes, belong to different communities, and are busy with different cases, I feel the fantasy of the colorful society and believe that democracy is the best way to support the fusion of communities and the forgery of a new harmonious society.

Democracy is concretized in the form of election. During the presidential election in last November, the democratic spirit deep rooted in American Dream inspired hundreds of millions of people in the United States and around the globe in the severe winter of titanic financial crisis. With great effort in the guidance of the democratic spirit by the world as a whole, we can take more care of minority groups and developing countries by listening to them in this rare opportunity in the restoring of credit system and prosperity of economy. Yes, we can!

From my point of view, the key problem of Chinese democracy is her failure to organize fair and effective elections. I will never forget the first vote that I casted in senior year of high school, when all of us in the grade were asked to poll in the election of representatives of the district. Although I knew I had not registered yet and I did not belong to the constituency of the district at all, I tried to take the right seriously. I found our principal was among the three candidates with two strangers I had never known, and, naturally, the principal received most votes at the polling site. With a sense of unfairness I voted for one of the other two while many fellow voters nominated themselves! What a joke of Chinese democracy and what a shame of the democratic spirit! I interrogated myself "Who cares?"

Disappointed but not desperate, I found from government officials to the general population, many uphold democratic beliefs. Our government has attempted to introduce democracy into the political system as a part of political reform, of which the basic-level election in countryside is a notably good start. I believe a democratic China can win more respect and a better service to the world. Yes, we can!

Will it be abit long? thks!

any advices will be welcomed!

Undergraduate / "Chase my love to secret of nature and philosophy" - Intellectual Goal [5]

how your personal or academic interests relate to your intellectual or professional goals.

For many years I have kept an interest in making friends with people elder or younger, gregarious or introverted. They share different characters and backgrounds, attracting me to get to know of them, be acquainted with them, and I am always willing to listen to their stories.

Since I settled in Beijing, I have experienced a lot about the capital and its people here. My best friend, Harry, is nearly desperate for the job market recently. Harry is an ambitious MBA from the top business school in China. His birth in a remote village and graduation from a forgettable college did not affect him getting a job in an auditing institute assisting Goldman Sachs in IPO projects. Without satisfying, he quitted the job, returned to campus, and by effort step by step got close to his terminal----an investment bank, only to encounter the financial crisis. When investment banks shut the door for recruitment, Harry refuses to decline his standard for the job, only submitting applications for positions matching an excellent MBA, for he believes his value and never regrets his choice. The choice of the 28-year-old guy moves and inspired me greatly, especially to decide my major.

That is Harry's story, along with sixteen million stories about dream and perseverance in Beijing. I was wondering whether to major in Science & Engineering for long. Although I treated Mathematics and Physics most seriously and therefore harvested an appreciation of the fantastic world of nature science, my interest in various fields and some kind of fear hesitated me to be an engineer. But Harry' s story instructs me that it is worthwhile to chase my love to secret of nature and philosophy to solve practical problems although sometimes it does appear tough and awesome. I know I earn it.

Thanks in advance.

Undergraduate / We should sense the world as it is; extracurricular activity, community service essay [2]

expln why you initially chose it, why you continued with it, and how you benefited from it.

When I was in fifth grade, my teacher organized a class visit to Welfare House. It was first time for all of us. On our arrival, the Chairman welcomed us, made an introduction, then showed us about. There lived people of all ages. The aged with nobody to rely on chatted in the sunshine. In a room we did not get any word when informed the lady lying on the bed bad been a plant for ten years. In the hall we met many lovely kids. Like in kindergarten, they were painting, playing with transformers, or reading comics. It was hard to link them with orphans who were abandoned by their parents for their disability or deformation. While the kids assembled and choired for us with genuine and innocent smiles, I felt a great shock for the sympathy of their miserable destiny.

Touch long stayed in my mind and motivated my friends and me to visit the place when I was in high school. Kids were always angels of happiness to whom we told stories and with whom we played games. Moreover, I spent more time with the elderly than that of the first time, for a teenager could understand what a grandpa's thought and was more willing to hear a grandma's story. That afternoon we talked about many topics in life, and I found what they really need is someone to talk with, to care for, and to take care of them with love.

One year later witnessed another warm get-together; nevertheless, I realized for minority groups care from society could never be too much, while for us the visits are far from adequate to contribute. We should sense the world as it is, make a difference in daily life, and to care for everyone around. Yes, we should.

couldnt be more appreciated~

Undergraduate / My expectation of college is more obvious, and my goal evolves gradually from uncertain to definite [2]

decribe how your college education will allow you to achieve personal and professional goals?

As I have graduated from high school a year ago, I have thought more about my college education, my personal goals, and my professional goals.

When I think about the last five years, I have to say that my expectation of college education gets more and more obvious, while my personal goal evolves gradually from uncertain to definite.

Colleges offer a comprehensive curriculum, which is basic of advanced education and significant for the build of my individual character; however, as far as specific scientific and occupational career concerned, college education of superficial knowledge is far from adequate. Undoubtedly, there is still a long way to my graduation, whether it is work experience or further educations.

Thus, I am supposed to find my real love and my value during the four years to come, which I believe is the invaluable gift from my college education, and propels me to have the eagerness for knowledge, the brevity against challenge and the perseverance with discovery.

My ideal is to be an enthusiastic, reliable man who thinks intelligently. I believe a college education will help me see and think objectively and critically, to break away from the simplicity of thinking in one or two dimensions. Also, I am sure my professors and fellows will bring me scepsis with meticulosity, courage with diligence, and passion with responsibility, besides friendship and respect. Thus, I can enjoy my circle and my family, create my enterprise, make contribution to society, chase my dream of a fantastic life.

Throughout the three years in high school, I felt no preference to any single subject and refused to abandon my interests in all subjects in science and arts. I believed all courses in elementary school would add to my wisdom and skills. Thus, I was once confused for long time about what on earth I should major in at the university. I esteemed scholars obsessed in experiments and surveys; I admired engineers applying new technologies to new products; I respected volunteers of NGO who bring humanity to deserted zones, and I wanted to take all their jobs and live all their lives!

Now, as I consider what I want to major in next four years and to be occupied with my life, I have decided that I want electrical engineering to be my first choice. While it has made indisplaceable contribution in the history of technological development and plays a significant role in our life, electrical engineering as a major offers various courses of a comprehensive knowledge system, which covers the fields of mathematics, physics, computer science, and management. Meanwhile, electrical engineering contains a wide range of sub-disciplines from power engineeringļ¼Œ signal processing, to Microelectronics and telecommunications, which means more potential and choices, and it will equip me with problem-solving skills and continuous learning ability, which are essential for me to be a sagacious and charitable person as my fundamental aspiration.

To conclude, I believe my college education will take me to the starting point of an extraordinary and valuable life.

any advice welcomed :~)

Undergraduate / essays for penn state u (career goals / personal statement) [6]

This is my essay for career goals:

As both of my parents were art students in college, when I was a little boy, I thought engineering jobs are mysterious and awesome. It is normal for a boy like me, and even many adults, because average people, in the typical run of ordinary life, do not ever have any personal dealings with engineers, even though we benefit from their work every day. When I watched the Discovery programs which introduced application of new technologies, I was shocked by the penetrating discernment and endless imagination of engineers; when I saw the panels of GE which said, "The wind energy power generation comes from GE", I admired the electrical industry for its contribution to the upgrading of life.

During my school years, I found many of those who did excellent jobs in math and physics and shared amazing practical skills, had parents with engineering backgrounds, though their jobs varied from chief designers, professors, to entrepreneurs. In the days I lived in Zhongguancun, Beijing, also called "China's Silicon Valley", every morning I could see staff of Internet companies and software suppliers fill up the streets, who hurried to office with prepared box lunch in their hands. When I accessed skyscrapers, I respected most the young engineers in research and development department of leading industrial companies, and I could feel my strong desire to join them.

I intend to pursue a bachelor degree in electrical engineering in next four years, and I am prepared to succeed within your rigorous program while the Department of Electrical Engineering at Penn State is among the largest, oldest, and the most innovative in the nation. While electrical engineers have contributed to the development of a wide range of technologies from the Global Positioning System to electrical power generation, electrical engineering as a major offers various courses of a comprehensive knowledge system, which covers the field of mathematics, physics, computer science, and management. Meanwhile, electrical engineering contains a wide range of sub-disciplines from power engineering, signal processing, instrumentation, to microelectronics and telecommunications, which means more potential and choices for a lifetime of success. Electrical engineers design, develop, test and supervise the deployment of electrical systems and electrical devices; they may work on the operation of power stations and the lighting and wiring of Olympic Venues; they can be found in the offices of a consulting firm or on site at a mine. Moreover, I believe the training to be an engineer will equip me with problem-solving skills and continuous learning ability, and will instruct me to think intelligently in an objective and critical way.

As Thomas L. Friedman commented in his book, "the world is flat in the twenty-first century", in which "flat" actually means "connected": a drastic lowering of trade and political barriers, a great change of business modes and work patterns, a radical improvement of work efficiency and life convenience, in the foundation of exponential technical advances of the digital revolution. Electrical Engineers, beyond doubt, have been and will always be the promotional force of the digital revolution and contributor to the "flat" world, together with software engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and other pioneer groups of society. I am eager to step into this process of "regenesis", and dedicate myself to better use of energy, construction of better telecommunication systems, and supplying better equipment to organizations, companies and individuals as an electrical engineer.

plz give advice.tks :)
