Undergraduate / BYU SOAR PROGRAM ESSAY #1: provide a biographical sketch that highlights experiences.. [3]
please provide a biographical sketch that highlights experiences, events, situations, or circumstances that have had a significant effect on you becoming the person you are today
I come from a family of Hispanics, my mother Karla had my sister at 17 with my father Hugo. They were from Mexico but came to America wanting to have an opportunity for a better future, but when my sister was born on June 4th 1995 they went through many troubles because she had Down syndrome. Being a parent was tough especially when i was born 2 years later on april 21 1997. We lived in Dayton Washington. Growing up My role wasn't to be the little sister but the big sister. In addition my parents didn't know any English therefore from a young age I always had to translate for them. I had more responsibilities than I knew I'd have. when my sister started pre-school so did i, even If I wasn't old enough yet. I had a hard Time understanding everything since Spanish was my first language. When the other kids at school started to read books with no pictures I was still trying to Read a picture book. I went to special Ed for help until 4th grade. Then I started taking my normal classes with everyone else. i realized i didn't get to know the other kids at school well this had a huge impact on my social skills. I had many pressures from being a big sister to translating and having a social life that I knew how to handle pressure. I'm grateful to have these trials in my life to learn from them.
i am a junior trying to get into the soar program my senior summer I really need the in because I have a low GPA and they only accept above a 3.0 I think and I know if I get in ill basically have a slight better chance to get into byu when I apply my senior year in the fall
