Please give your thoughts and advice. Thank you very much!

It was Christmas eve, I had my neural network model looking at the deep starry sky through the best space telescopes in the world, recognizing tens of thousands of supermassive black holes hosting at the center of distant galaxies. I swept quite a few coffee and Redbull cans from my desk to the trash can, realizing I just made a significant improvement on a notoriously difficult cosmology problem with AI technique. This was the day I made up my mind to study artificial intelligence-I showed myself how AI could, and gonna, change the way we treat problems. This experience motivated me to join the ranks of the scientists who improve AI and apply AI in our civilization, and it is why I am motivated to apply for this program.

I graduated from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, a high school which requires the highest scholastic performance in Taiwan. I am currently an undergraduate student majoring in physics at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), which is normally considered as one of the best universities in Taiwan. In addition, I had been an exchange student at Seoul National University (SNU) for a year. My parents are both civil servants, engaging in the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan. In addition, I have a grandmother and a younger sister in my family.

I have the necessary background to conduct researches in the field of artificial intelligence for the following reasons: (i) I have published a paper based on neural networks in one of the world's leading astronomy journals as the first and corresponding author. (ii) I have worked as an intern in Kneron Inc., an international AI enterprise, and have made contributions to the improvement of the commercialized face recognition model. (iii) When I was an exchange student at SNU, I once proposed and wrote a thesis about a novel architecture based on double deep Q-learning (DDQN), showing my idea improves the performance of DDQN.

I once summarized my research as a paper, conquered the peer-review process, and published the paper in the journal. As a physics major student in NTHU, I joined Prof. Tomo Goto's cosmology group and sought for my undergraduate research project. After quite a few literature surveys, I noticed that recognizing active galactic nuclei, a type of galaxy cores powered by supermassive black holes, is a problem that remains unsolved. Instead of the classic statistical analysis method, I came up with the idea that using a neural net to do the classification might be more effective. As a result, my method based on convolutional neural networks exhibits a significant improvement in performance compared with the traditional method. Finally, my paper "An Active Galactic Nucleus Recognition Model based on Deep Neural Network" is accepted and published in one of the top astrophysics journals "Monthly Notice of Royal Astronomy Society (MNRAS)," and I am the first author and corresponding author of it.

I was hired as an intern in Kneron Inc., an international enterprise providing edge AI solutions, and this experience has strengthened my ability in developing AI-related applications.I submitted my CV to Kneron, got the intern offer, and cumulatively worked there for more than 6 months. During my intern period, I was responsible for improving the performance of Kneron's face recognition model. My mentor Mr. Vincent Shen assigned me to build an application that could develop a face database, including images and labels, in an efficient manner. I make the application features with customized model selection, embedding auto-clustering, MongoDB connection, GUI interface, etc. Eventually, Kneron has hired several workers using this application to build a face database owned by Kneron.

I wrote a thesis about an improved architecture regarding deep double Q-learning (DDQN).When I was exchanging at SNU, I took a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) course and was required to complete a thesis at the end of the semester. We know that deep Q-learning (DQN) always suffers from the overestimation problem, thus previous studies have proposed architectures like DDQN to avoid it. In my thesis, I proposed MDQN, a modified architecture based on DDQN but train and displace a set of online networks sequentially, with the target networks relaying between the displacements. The test results on an ATARI game show my MDQN is likely to be better than the popular DDQN. Finally, I got a score of A0 in the DRL course.

In summary, I have an SCI journal paper about AI application for cosmology research, an intern experience in an international AI enterprise, and a thesis regarding an improved DDQN architecture. I am looking forward to advancing my knowledge of AI in your program.

Scholarship / Statement of Purpose; Goal of Study & Study Plan Graduate : Art Management [6]

Hi moondeluna,

The SOP requirement in this section is goal of study and detailed study plan. I feel like your first paragraph is more like your motivation to study in Korea, which should be a minor part or consider moving it to your PS. The exact study plan is apparently too simple and not detailed. It is more like a draft of your outline. Please extend your three-phase plan to a article containing three paragraph indicating your practical plan.

Scholarship / Korean broadcasting will change us for the better - KGSP Master 2021 Personal Statement [3]

Hi Semos,
I would like to suggest you to move your motivation paragraph to the top. The motivation is the first requirement in the instruction, and I think motivation is more important for the selector.

Besides, I guess you need to minimize your experience of high school, since you are already applying graduate school.
The term "Turkey's broadcasting understanding entered into a vicious circle." seems not very proper. Please always be optimistic in the application. You may say something like "Korean media has the feature XXX which is hard to find in Turkey".

Your statement on the relative experience needs more details. Please state your situation, your task, the action you have taken and the event result clearly.

Scholarship / DRL model - [KGSP] MASTER IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE - Goal of study and detailed study plan [3]

Greeting from Taiwan! Good evening : )

I am intending to apply the admission for KAIST graduate school of artificial intelligence via Korean Government Scholarship program (KGSP).
The following content is my goal of study for the program.

KGSP Statement of purpose -- AI major -- Goal of study and detailed study plan

Please give your thoughts and advice. Thank you very much!

The magic of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms genuinely attracts me; hence, I wish to study this topic as my master's research. I had taken a graduate course of DRL when I exchanged in SNU and had written a thesis regarding an improved architecture of DDQN. However, in Taiwan, DRL research is not a very popular field. For example, in my school NTHU, only one professor is doing it. In contrast, the AI school of KAIST has quite a few professors doing DRL research. To access an academic environment that fits my interest, I hope to study for my master's degree in KAIST AI school.

My primary goal for the study in KAIST is to publish two papers regarding DRL during my master's studying period. Since I have been experienced in publishing papers and already have a good understanding of DRL, I think this goal is achievable. Regarding the detailed plan, I have conducted some literature survey on the KAIST publications and concluded my intended research field.

I am interested in Prof. Beomjoon Kim's research on task and motion planning (TAMP) problem. For example, in Prof. Kim's paper "Adversarial Actor-Critic Method for Task and Motion Planning Problems Using Planning Experience," they propose a novel loss function that learns the value function from sequences search trees and penalizes the operator instances generated by the policy adversarially. I feel excited when reading this kind of innovation on training DRL agents, and I hope I could help develop ideas like a better form of loss function or an advanced algorithm for plan skeleton searching. Of course, I would conduct the corresponding experiments and summarize them as a manuscript.

Further, I intend to research an alternative solution to the multiple control frequencies problem with Prof. Kee-Eung Kim and his students. Their work "Reinforcement Learning for Control with Multiple Frequencies" has proposed an Action-Persistent Actor-Critic (AP-AC) algorithm that performs the optimization for periodic policy. I think the multiple control frequencies problem is practical in real-world applications; thus, this field's research should be potential and valuable. After I engage in this lab, I would like to devise an algorithm to solve the problem of multiple control frequencies based on DQN or DDPG, and I expect the method could be analogous to the concept of AP-AC. Finally, I will experiment and compare the model performances.

I am also interested in studying the way we improve the DRL model with theoretical inference. The paper "Representation Balancing Offline Model-Based Reinforcement Learning" done by anonymous KAIST authors has motivated me to learn more about AI algorithms' theoretical analysis. This paper has proposed a framework balancing the target policy and behavior policy by adding a specific term on reward evaluation to minimize the off-policy evaluation error, and such regularizer is derived from a theoretical observation. I am amazed to know we could improve DRL algorithms from theoretical indication. I wish I could learn the necessary knowledge to hold theoretical derivations in my research, consequently, attach the theoretical analysis in my paper. I once read a paper using the framework of thermal physics to show the universal approximation theorem of neural networks. As a physics bachelor, I have a strong background in carrying out theoretical derivations; hence, I believe my participation in the theoretical analysis on DRL could bring a substantial contribution.

In summary, my main goal for the study in KAIST AI school is to publish two DRL papers during my master's studying period. My intending field of research includes but is not limited to studying TAMP problem with Prof. Beomjoon Kim, innovating a new solution for the issue of multiple control frequencies with Prof. Kee-Eung Kim, and exploring the theoretical way for improving DRL algorithms with the currently anonymous KAIST authors.

Scholarship / Fighter family - KGSP Scholarship - Personal Statemente International Relations [3]

Hi gloriacabral,
I think you have a good background for application, but you need to shorten your essay. You are mentioning several experience seems not relevant to IR, and the experiences regarding IR are not clearly described.

You may need to delete some of the descriptions since GKS only allows a PS in one page. For the important and useful experience in this PS, you need to specifically state what task you have encountered, what action you have taken and what was the result. Describe a few significant events in detail instead of many brief introductions.

You really don't need to mention the term "escape," causing unnecessary alerting.
In summary, shorten the essay and give more details on specific experiences. Good luck

Scholarship / SCHOLARSHIP GKS - PERSONAL STATEMENT GRADUATE DEGREE 2021 - Public Administration. [6]

Hi Anyellaa,
Your essay has only very little discussion on your PA related experience.
I think you should shorten the part regarding the high school experience since you are applying a master degree.
The university study experience should be extended. What course you took is related to PA? Did you complete some excellent course work? Try to present it and it makes the essay more convincible.

You better change the way of describing your financial difficulty. You may imply you come from a low-income family or you are from a developing country, it brings you priority. But for now, I can't see anything fits that;

To the best of my knowledge, you are binging the financial status with your motivation. NEVER do this. The motivation should only be "your interest in PA"

Good luck with the revision.

Scholarship / [KGSP/GKS SCHOLARSHIP] MASTER IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE - Future plan after study [2]

Greeting from Taiwan! Good evening : )

I am intending to apply the admission for KAIST graduate school of artificial intelligence via Korean Government Scholarship program (KGSP).
The following content is my future plan after study. It is a short one since it is gonna share the page limit with other topics in my SOP.

KGSP STATEMENT OF PURPOSE -- AI MAJOR -- FUTURE PLAN AFTER STUDY

Please give your thoughts and advice. Thank you very much!

In terms of the plan after study, I would continue to pursue my Ph.D. degree in KAIST AI school after obtaining an AI master's degree. I expect to have comprehensive knowledge of AI when I finish my master's studying period. Subsequently, I can research in a more advanced and productive manner and publish more AI papers.

After earning my Ph.D. degree, I would like to join either research, engineering, or science team in DeepMind. The scientists in DeepMind conquer all 57 Atari games with their DRL agent last March, which is an event that makes me feel envious, attracting me to join them. Managing to achieve this goal allows me to work with the most innovative and intelligent AI engineers worldwide. Eventually, I could develop state-of-the-art AI models with them.

Last but not least, if I am lucky enough to discover a commercially worthy AI idea during my master's or Ph.D. studying period, I will make my best effort to seek funding and kick-start my own business. I regard deep reinforcement learning as a rapidly developing and highly potential field. As a result, it would always be one of my most significant objectives to look for a chance of commercial operation.

All in all, I plan to study for my Ph.D. in KAIST AI school after I graduated. After I finish my Ph.D. degree, I would like to join DeepMind and develop more advanced AI models. On the other hand, I would always seek a commercially worthy AI idea and start-up the business with my innovation.

Scholarship / GLOBAL KOREA SCHOLARSHIP_ PERSONAL STATEMENT_COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING [4]

Hi sunny1909,
You already have a really good background for the application, but you are not well presenting it.
You mentioned you have work experience and two conferences, but you are not disclosing any detail info.
What did you achieve in your work? Do you have any good contribution to your company?
What was your research's topic? What were the importance and the result of your works?
You need to clarify your task, the action you have taken, and results you have achieved.
In contrast, the one that motivates you to study in Korea should be a minor part or be deleted, since the purpose of studying in Korea is no longer included in PS.

You spend more words on your high school experience than your college experience. Focus on the college experience since it is a graduate school application.

I don't really feel your enthusiasm for CS. Try to describe the reason why " The more I am involved in and presented my researches in the conferences, the more I love those fields." Telling a personal story would be a good choice.

Good luck
