Undergraduate / 'preparations for the move continued' - Significant Challenge supplement [2]
Tell us about the most significant challenge you've faced or something important that didn't go according to plan. How did you manage the situation?(*) (200-250 words)
The most significant challenge I've faced came when my parents told me in the fall of my freshman year that we were moving to London. I was surprised, but it didn't seem all that radical to me when I considered my childhood.
As a child, I had the opportunities to live in places such as Russia, Boston, and on a boat for a year touring the East Coast and the Caribbean. However, at the time of my parents announcement I had been living in Manhasset for three years and was involved in activities ranging from Science Honor Society, to Chess Club, to the Rowing Team. My identity was intertwined with that of the town, and I was wary of the uncertainty of moving to another country.
As the year went on, preparations for the move continued. I applied to potential future high schools, went house hunting with my parents, and spent Christmas and February breaks in London. The most important lesson I learned during this was the importance of accepting challenges and embracing new opportunities. I began to see the move in a positive light. I was eager to take advantage of the situation, and although I knew it wouldn't be an easy change I was excited for the challenge.
The second most significant challenge I've faced was the spring of my freshman year, when my parents told me they had decided not to move. Initially, I was disappointed; however, I realized the significance of the lessons I learned that year about the importance of being adaptable and eagerly taking on challenges, and although I didn't get the opportunity to live in London, I did get the opportunity to grow and mature as a person.
