Prompt: One A4 page, stating your motivation for choosing this specific Master's degree programme at ETH Zurich and for choosing the two specialisations.
First draft, conclusive paragraph pending. Kindly review!

I am writing to express my strong motivation to pursue a Master's degree in Civil Engineering at ETH Zurich, with a focus on the specialisations in Structural Engineering and Construction and Maintenance Management. My passion for net-zero infrastructure development and my commitment to advancing engineering practices drive my aspiration to be part of ETH Zurich's renowned program.
Living in a rapidly developing country exposed me to constant changes in civil infrastructure all around. Projects such as tunnels, expressways, urban rail systems and skyscrapers sparked the passion of civil engineering and led me to join the xxx, where I built a strong academic foundation and gradually developed research acumen. ETH Zurich stands out to me for the Master's degree because of initiatives such as the Lighthouse project with its current research goals emphasising on interdisciplinary innovations in upcoming urban centres, future proof infrastructure and monitoring systems and prediction of the changing environment. These goals perfectly align with my interests and the areas I aspire to contribute to. The holistic and flexible curriculum that includes a vast choice of electives, excursions, digital subjects and project-based courses offer an exciting departure from traditional learning methods I have been familiar with. Freedom to work boundlessly because of cutting edge technology, ten institutes within D-BAUG as well as the collaborative research efforts further makes ETH Zurich an ideal choice and a solid base to fulfil my eventual dream of starting a research consultancy firm in the sustainable civil engineering domain.
As my undergraduate journey progressed, I became increasingly interested in Structural Engineering problems as they allowed me to apply, understand and visualize theoretical knowledge very well. After gaining experience upon presenting my international conference paper titled "Investigations into aerodynamics of tall buildings using signal processing tools" and working on my major project on retrofitting for earthquake resistant design (ERD) in the Himalayan terrain, I choose to go ahead with the Structural Engineering specialisation at ETH Zurich which has laid a special focus on problems related to these subjects. I am especially intrigued by the prospects of optimizing wind turbine designs for enhanced energy efficiency, as this aligns with my prior experience in wind engineering and structural dynamics, offering a chance to apply advanced technologies to real-world problems.
Upon becoming more familiar with the real construction world through field trips and taking note of the environmental disasters being faced regularly due to unchecked urbanisation in my vicinity, I understood the importance of inculcating sustainability and innovation in our field. Having worked with waste material (pine needles, polypropylene fibres and coconut husk)-reinforced concrete mix designs, the specialisation Construction and Maintenance Management is my second choice due to the focus on ground sustainable building technologies and materials as well as using digitalization as a means of green construction and maintenance to lower carbon footprint. Its integration of social and environmental considerations into construction practices aligns with my ongoing efforts to educate communities about the hazards of aging infrastructure and the need for efficient yet cost effective retrofitting solutions. I am eager to extend knowledge to diverse societal and economic contexts that will be presented to me at the Institute.

The weakness of this essay lies in how you do not really portray your strengths as a researcher and developer of projects and programs that relate to this field. Students are fond of citing an "alignment of goals", without clearly referring to what these are. Your alignment cannot be in perfect synchronicity with the academic program. They may be some similarities, and that is there your foindation for your application should lie.

As you are citing a specific international conference for your study and research presentation, you must cite the event title, where it was done, and when. This is for the confirmation of the reviewer who will be left wondering as to the validity of your claim. There are some information that he has to verify for himself. Be as specific as you can when mentioning accomplishments and publications.

Thankyou for the review Holt! I have incorporated your suggestions and come up with the following:

I am writing to express my strong motivation to pursue a Master's degree in Civil Engineering at ETH Zurich, with a focus on the specialisations in Structural Engineering and Construction and Maintenance Management. Living in a rapidly developing country exposed me to constant changes in civil infrastructure all around. Projects such as tunnels, expressways, urban rail systems and skyscrapers sparked the passion of civil engineering and led me to pursue a Bachelor's at the xxx where I built a strong academic foundation and gradually developed research acumen.
ETH Zurich stands out to me for the Master's degree because of initiatives such as the Lighthouse project with its current research goals emphasising on interdisciplinary innovations in upcoming urban centres, future proof infrastructure and monitoring systems and prediction of the changing environment. These goals align well with my interests and the areas I aspire to contribute to. The holistic and flexible curriculum that includes a vast choice of electives, excursions, digital subjects and project-based courses offer an exciting departure from traditional learning methods I have been familiar with.
As my undergraduate journey progressed, I became increasingly interested in Structural Engineering problems as they allowed me to apply, understand and visualize theoretical knowledge very well. For my conference paper titled "Investigations into aerodynamics of tall buildings using signal processing tools" presented at ICCMES held between 4th and 5th October 2024 in JUIT Solan, India, I used Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to analyse raw wind tunnel pressure data and identify dominant pressure patterns/key dynamic modes overlooked by traditional empirical methods. Upon validation with existing literature and IS 875 (Part 3):2015 using Power Spectral Density plots; optimized building designs, smart energy efficient systems to promote sustainability were suggested in the paper. Furthermore, I am working on my major project on retrofitting for earthquake resistant design (ERD) in the Himalayan terrain where our team has been assessing public school buildings through rapid survey techniques for earthquake safety, reinforcement corrosion and fire safety. The Structural Engineering specialisation at ETH Zurich has laid a special focus on problems related to these subjects. I am especially intrigued by the prospects of optimizing wind turbine designs for enhanced energy efficiency, as this complements my prior experience in wind engineering and structural dynamics, offering a chance to apply advanced technologies to real-world problems and explore new dimensions in the field.
Upon becoming familiar with the construction world through field trips and taking note of the environmental disasters being faced regularly due to unchecked urbanisation in my vicinity, I understood the importance of inculcating net zero goals and innovation in our field. I want to be at the forefront of integrating social and environmental considerations into construction practices as evident in my ongoing project efforts to educate communities about the hazards of aging infrastructure and the need for efficient yet cost effective retrofitting solutions such as an application that will generate structured reports with details on structural issues, recommended retrofitting techniques and cost estimates according to data entered by laymen. I am eager to extend knowledge to diverse societal and economic contexts that will be presented to me at the Institute.
Freedom to work boundlessly because of cutting edge technology, ten institutes within D-BAUG as well as the collaborative research efforts makes ETH Zurich an ideal choice to expand my expertise and fulfil my eventual dream of starting a research consultancy firm in sustainable civil engineering. It is the place where I will be able to convert a research paper into a green, viable commercial product that serves its purpose properly.Thank you for considering my application.
