Innovation often begins not in a laboratory, but in everyday observations. My journey toward Food
Science and Technology was shaped long before I entered university, in the farming communities of
South Punjab, Pakistan. Growing up in a family whose livelihood depended on agriculture, I witnessed a
recurring paradox: while farmers worked tirelessly to produce food, substantial portions of that food
were lost before reaching consumers due to spoilage, inadequate preservation methods, and limited
value-addition opportunities. These experiences taught me that food security is not only about
producing more food but also about preserving, transforming, and creating value from what is already
produced.
Motivated by this realization, I pursued a Bachelor's degree in Food Science and Technology at Islamia
University of Bahawalpur. Unlike many students who discover their interests gradually, I entered this
field with a clear purpose. I wanted to understand how science could convert highly perishable
agricultural commodities into safe, nutritious, and economically valuable food products. Throughout my
academic journey, I became particularly interested in food preservation, food processing, product
development, packaging technology, and consumer-oriented innovation because these disciplines offer
practical solutions to the challenges I witnessed growing up.
My academic performance reflects my commitment to this purpose. I currently maintain a CGPA of
3.92/4.00 and rank among the top students in a cohort of approximately one hundred students. My
achievements include the Punjab Honhaar Scholarship, the Prime Minister's Merit Laptop Award, and
multiple merit-based academic awards. These recognitions represent not only academic excellence but
also perseverance. Coming from a rural community where higher education for girls is often considered
an unnecessary investment, reaching university required determination, resilience, and the unwavering
support of my mother. This journey strengthened my belief that education can become a powerful
catalyst for social and economic transformation.
Among the many experiences that shaped my academic development, one stands out as particularly
meaningful: the creation of a value-added meat product inspired by traditional preservation practices
used in rural Pakistan. Growing up, I often heard stories from my mother and grandmother about the
traditional drying of meat after Eid as a method of preservation. While the practice was effective for
extending shelf life, I became interested in exploring how it could be modernized using food science
principles.
This curiosity led me to develop a shelf-stable protein snack project based on beef strips. Rather than
simply replicating traditional methods, I applied scientific principles of marination, heat treatment,
dehydration, moisture control, and packaging to create a product that combined cultural heritage with
modern food processing techniques. Throughout the development process, I faced multiple challenges,
particularly regarding texture optimization and flavor stability after drying. Repeated experimentation,
formulation adjustments, and process modifications enabled me to improve product quality while
maintaining the product's nutritional and cultural identity.
This experience fundamentally changed my understanding of innovation. I realized that successful food
innovation is not merely about creating something new. It is about identifying consumer needs,
understanding market realities, preserving cultural authenticity, and applying scientific knowledge to
create products that are safe, appealing, and commercially viable. This realization directly aligns with
the philosophy of FIPDes.
Beyond product development, I actively pursued industrial exposure through my internship in the
Quality Assurance Department at Lucky Snacks (Pvt.) Ltd. During this experience, I gained practical
knowledge of quality assurance systems, food safety management, sensory evaluation, packaging
inspection, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), industrial documentation, and laboratory testing
procedures. Working in an industrial environment allowed me to observe how product quality,
consumer expectations, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance interact throughout the food
production process. The experience reinforced my understanding that successful food products require
both scientific excellence and industrial feasibility.
I am particularly attracted to FIPDes because it uniquely integrates food science, engineering,
innovation, consumer research, and product design within an international learning environment. Unlike
conventional master's programs that focus primarily on technical specialization, FIPDes emphasizes the
complete lifecycle of food innovation, from raw materials and formulation to consumer acceptance and
market success. This comprehensive approach aligns perfectly with my professional ambitions.
The opportunity to study at AgroParisTech and Université Paris-Saclay is especially appealing because of
their internationally recognized expertise in food engineering, food design, and innovation
management. I am eager to deepen my understanding of food structure, formulation science, sensory
optimization, and product development methodologies. Equally exciting is the opportunity to study at
the University of Naples Federico II, whose expertise in healthy food design, functional ingredients, and
nutrition-oriented product innovation complements my interest in developing products that are not
only shelf-stable but also nutritionally valuable.
What excites me most about FIPDes is its multicultural and multidisciplinary learning environment.
Modern food challenges are global in nature and require collaboration across cultures, disciplines, and
industries. Studying alongside students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds will allow me to
develop the adaptability, creativity, and international perspective necessary for leading innovation in
the food sector.
My long-term vision extends beyond personal career advancement. Following the completion of FIPDes,
I aim to gain international experience within food innovation initiatives, development organizations, and
global food-sector projects. Exposure to international best practices will help me understand how
innovative products are developed, scaled, and successfully introduced into competitive markets.
Ultimately, I intend to return to Pakistan and establish value-added food enterprises focused on
transforming locally available agricultural commodities into nutritious, safe, shelf-stable, and
commercially competitive products.
Pakistan loses significant value through inadequate processing and limited product diversification
despite its strong agricultural base. I believe that innovation-driven food entrepreneurship can help
bridge this gap by creating products that increase shelf life, reduce waste, improve nutrition, and
generate economic opportunities for rural communities. My goal is to become part of this
transformation by combining scientific expertise, product innovation, and sustainable business
practices.
FIPDes represents the ideal platform for achieving these aspirations. The program's unique combination
of scientific rigor, industrial relevance, international collaboration, and innovation-focused education
