Dear Members of the Admission Committee,
I am writing to express my strong interest in the Master's Programme in Mathematical Modelling, Simulation and Data Science for Industrial and Societal Challenges (MATHS-DISC).
As I approach the completion of my Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and Computation at Instituto Superior Técnico (a member of programme consortium), I am eager to broaden my studies in a truly international environment that will shape me as global professional. The Erasmus Mundus MATHS-DISC programme is an invaluable opportunity to engage with a diverse academic traditions and collaborate with international experts to address real-world challenges.
Throughout my undergraduate studies, I built a strong foundation on mathematics and statics and developed solid analytical skills in data analysis, modelling and optimization. I now aim to apply this background in a hands-on, multidisciplinary environment, bridging the gap between mathematical theory and applied fields such as machine learning and finance.
A defining moment in this journey was my experience in Mathematical Finance (a MATHS-Disc elective module), where I observed* how the abstract frameworks behind stochastic processes are adapted to to tackle concrete financial problems. The balance between theoretical rigor and the management of constraints and uncertainty resonated with me, leading me to discover a passion for structured yet open-ended problems.
The balance between theoretical rigor and practical judgment of constraints and uncertainty drew me in and I ended up discovering a passion for structured yet open-ended problems. Motivated by this insight, I chose to study zero-sum games and Nash equilibria (guided by Game Theory, Alive by Anna R. Karlin and Yuval Peres) in my bachelor's research project. In the future, In the future, I hope to integrate these concepts with real-world data to study the evolution of markets and auctions.
Beyond academics, I actively sought to engage in networking and industry-oriented initiatives. Through the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST), I helped organize the BEST Entrepreneurship Program, a student-led, week-long event featuring workshops, networking sessions and a problem-solving competition based on challenges proposed by active companies. This experience strengthened my teamwork skills and confirmed my interest in applying mathematics in industry contexts, making the programme's industry partnerships and internship opportunities especially attractive.
I also volunteered at the BEST Course "AI in Healthcare," assisting international participants during their stay which enhanced my intercultural communication skills and rehinforced my motivation to study in a international academic environment.
Additionally, I have been involved in mathematical outreach, introducing programming to children through MakeCode Arcade and JavaScript classes, where I learned to relay complex ideas in an accessible way. At the Núcleo de Estudantes de Matemática do Técnico (NMATH), I also contributed to editing articles for the association's scientific magazine and helped organize workshops and lectures.
Ultimately, I am confident that MATH-DISCS will provide the advanced training, international perspective and professional network I seek to pursue a career applying mathematics to complex real-world problems..
I would be honored to contribute my commitment and enthusiasm to this prestigious programme and its academic community. Thank you for your time and consideration. I patiently await the opportunity to further discuss my candidacy.
Sincerely,
-I'm very bad at this things so I'm second guessing everything: the size, the focus, the tone
-Extremely grateful for anyone who helps :)
