I need a lot of help since I'm not the greatest writer in the world. My professor is very strict when is comes to grammar usage. She is very picky on making things singular and plural. If anyone could help me out that would be much appreciated.

This report discusses the different aspects of the difficulties that a family goes through when having an autistic child. It will also discuss how the child with autism affects the entire family.

The purpose of this report is to:
- Inform families about the effects of autism
- Inform siblings about the effects of autism
- Inform families of the major adjustments for the family
- Inform others about the awareness of autism

My audience for this report is for those who has a child with autism or for those who are interested on reading about how autism affects the family. Every relationship in the family changes once a child with autism enters the family. The importance of knowing how to handle the different situations is very crucial for the autistic child and the family as well.

My intention for this report will set awareness of the importance of knowing the different situations when raising an autistic child. Also to inform and guide those who are seeking out information for help or for general information about autism.

Abstract

This report provides an overview information of the causes of autism and the attention that will be needed when having an autistic child. It is four times more dominate in boys than girls. There is about 1.5 million children and adults in America who has autism. Autism is a disorder that can not be outgrown, but there is a chance for the symptoms to decrease as the child develops. Having an autistic child in the family can have a huge impact on family relationships and the siblings who has to live their lives differently because of the changes that has to be made to comfort to child's need with autism. There are many treatment facilities that work one-on-one with a child who has autism that can make drastic changes in that child's life and the family as well.

Introduction

Having an autistic child places stress on everyone in the family. Each family member is affected when a child in their family has autism. With so much care and attention that a child with special needs will need, it breaks the equality that a sibling is looking for from their parents.

Literature Review

Wikipedia defines autism as a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication skills, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. Wikipedia also claims how autism "affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize. Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. "Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities" (Autism Society of America).

Many people in the 1900s believed that autism was linked with schizophrenia. Eugen Bleuler, a Swiss psychiatrist, was the first person to come up with the term that is now called autism. "From the 1960s through the 1970s, research into treatments for autism focused on medications such as LSD, electric shock, and behavior change techniques" (WebMD). These techniques relied on pain and punishment. As the years went by, better treatments were found for children with autism. During the 1980s and 1990s, the role of behavior therapy and the "use of highly controlled learning environments emerged as the primary treatments for many forms of autism and related conditions" (WebMD).

Many researches believe that autism can be passed down genetically. Studies have shown that parents with family members of autism, has a higher chance of passing the disorder to their child. "It is also the case that many families with one autistic child are at increased risk of having more than one autistic child" (Lisa Jo Rudy). There is evidence that autism is caused by certain food allergies and that autism is linked to problems in the immune system (Lisa Jo Rudy). When researchers compared brain activity to a child with autism and a child without autism they found out that a child with autism processes information differently compared to a child without autism. They also found that a child with autism has a slightly larger brain (Lisa Jo Rudy).

Scope and Methods

This report examines the difficulties that a family goes through when having an autistic child. It will examine the effects of relationship between the child with autism and their siblings. It is important to know how much a family's life will change and the sacrifices they will need to make for their autistic child.

The main sources used in this report are sources from online websites. I mainly focused on articles and medical websites to gather my information for this report. I also found it more interesting reading reviews on articles with family members who deal with this problem everyday. I received most of my medial terms and basic information about autism from a medical site called WebMD and stories about individual families of all the hardships and difficulties that they go through in their lives.

The remainder of this report will discuss the effects on siblings and parents. It will also discuss on the financial hardships and how difficult it is to maintain a treatment, as well as the major adjustments that needs to be done for the family.
