While this change has made communication faster and more accessible, it has also introduced a major challenge: misinformation spreads more quickly and widely than ever before. Misinformation refers to false or misleading information that is shared without necessarily intending to cause harm, although it can still have harmful consequences. On social media, misinformation can take many forms, including inaccurate health claims, misleading political posts, manipulated videos, or exaggerated interpretations of events.
Because social media platforms are designed to prioritize engagement rather than accuracy, misinformation often spreads further than verified information. Content that is emotionally charged or controversial tends to attract more attention, which increases its visibility. As a result, false information can reach large audiences before corrections are even introduced.
This raises an important question: should social media companies be required to take greater responsibility for limiting misinformation on their platforms?
Social media companies play an important role in modern communication and should not be treated exactly like traditional publishers. However, they do influence what billions of people see every day through algorithmic systems that determine visibility. Because of this influence, I argue that social media companies should be required to take stronger responsibility for reducing harmful misinformation, especially when it impacts public health, democratic participation, and trust in reliable information sources.
This issue is also personally relevant to me. As a Walgreens store manager and immunization lead, I regularly interact with patients who bring in information they have seen online. Some of this information is harmless, but other times it directly affects their willingness to receive vaccines or follow medical guidance. I have had conversations with patients who expressed hesitation based on viral posts they saw on social media platforms. These experiences highlight that misinformation is not just a digital issue it becomes a real-world issue very quickly.
