MY WRITE UP:
Having grown up in Gaborone, I have witnessed Botswana's remarkable economic growth, largely driven by the diamond mining sector, which contributes approximately 80% of export earnings and a significant share of government revenue and GDP. This mineral-led growth has financed infrastructure expansion, urban development and industrial activity, particularly in and around Gaborone. However, alongside this progress, occupational safety risks remain visible across construction sites, municipal services, mining operations and small-scale industrial enterprises. Workers in both formal and informal sectors are often exposed to preventable hazards, highlighting the need for stronger, data-driven occupational safety and health (OSH) systems. These observations have shaped my academic objective to pursue a Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health in the United States. My goal is to develop advanced expertise in regulatory design, enforcement mechanisms, inspection systems and incident reporting frameworks, with the intention of transferring this knowledge to strengthen OSH governance in Botswana-particularly within Gaborone's rapidly expanding economic environment
Since graduating from OHS degree, I professionally worked with a road safety NGO conducting training on road safety at different private institutions, partnering with government departments and any different private stakeholders national campaign programs that involved community road safety training,data collection, road audits and development and implementation of preventive measures to combat road accidents. I went on to join national government internship programme under Healthcare serving as a Safety and Health Intern. My scope of work involves continuous inspection of the hospital facility to pick any safety gaps, develop corrective measures to anomalies, sensitization of staff on safety and health and engaging with relevant committees and management on plannings and development of safety and health related issues. However, I realized that my past experiences from private settings were rather insufficient in the government/public service setting where safety and health is completely new and rudimentary, unstructured from ministerial level and have no frameworks established to govern safety and health across government departments and workers.
Through coursework and study thesis done within the U.S environment, my primary objectives are to:
A)Assess the U.S regulatory frameworks and OSH legislation thoroughly to use as benchmark reference to Botswana.
B)Evaluate Institutional & Enforcement structures using semi-structured interviews with the U.S OSH practitioners and regulators concerning their enforcement capacities and compliance monitoring systems.
C)Analyze U.S structural elements of risk inspection models,reporting requirements,enforcement & penalty structures and surveillance mechanisms and identify transferable best practices.
D)Framework Development, all the findings and conclusions drawn will be used in curating a regulatory and data based OSH governai9okmjuyhhnce model custom made for Botswana.
Upon completing my studies, I plan on returning to Botswana, though my current government contract would have already elapsed and considering scarcity of specialized OSH postgraduates experts in Botswana, for the next 5 years I anticipate to join government as a consultant and eventually sit on the upcoming OSH national board committee where I will use my I would be able to bring in my acquired advanced expertise and support in developing and implementing the proposed OSH governance model for our Botswana much needed for formal and informal sectors at both private and public settings. I would be able to contribute on OSH regulatory and legislative reforms, simplifying enforcement and compliance strategies. I envision a Botswana safer working conditions and well informed policies , a mining worker who is protected by well structured laws, companies that complies to regulatory standards. A Botswana with enforcement agencies, regulators and inspectors that performs their duties as per international standards and calls out non complacency with evidence data backing.
Pursuing this master`s within the United States other than Botswana reposition me closer to my dream to rebrand Botswana OSH status. The scientific-base foundation of U.S programs and their world-class research opportunities are not readily available in Botswana. Moreover, The U.S provides training and practical knowledge of international standards which are recognize by globally recognized like OSHA and such opportunities are only at preliminary stages and sectors here in Botswana. I can imagine being in the mix of global networking opportunities presented whilst studying within the U.S soil, the global perspectives, diverse experts and advanced technologies at my disposal to further my OSH. In Botswana such opportunities are very limited and not readily accessible at not yet.
