AI does not shape the future; we do. That single line, spoken by a guest speaker at the Awareness-Raising Campaign on AI under the AI Ready ASEAN programme, has stayed with me ever since. More than a statement about artificial intelligence, it became a challenge: If we are the ones shaping the future, then we must also take responsibility for understanding the technology that will define it. It made me realize that although AI has become part of our daily lives, the responsibility for building our future still rests in our own hands.

My passion for innovation has consistently driven my academic pursuits, and it truly began to flourish during my junior high school years in the Science, Technology, and Engineering Program (STE-P), a specialized curriculum reserved for students with a strong interest in the field. Being part of this program was both a recognition and a commitment. It allowed me to explore elective subjects like Robotics and Practical Research, classes that weren't just theoretical but immersive and hands-on, sparking a sense of wonder and possibility. I still remember the day I was tasked with coding a small robot using an application in front of the class. Nervous yet excited, I programmed it to respond to colors: when it detected blue, it moved backward; when it saw green, it moved forward. That moment, simple yet profound, gave me a deeper confidence in my ability to create and solve problems through technology. This dedication was reflected in my academic performance, as I consistently earned honors, achieving grades of 94%, 93%, and 94% across the three grading periods of Grade 10.

Another defining experience was our Science Investigatory Project titled "Microbial Fuel Cell from Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Scales: Phosphate-Soluble Bacteria," a project we ultimately completed and presented at a school-based competition. Our goal was to repurpose discarded tilapia fish scales by harnessing the bacteria they carry to generate energy. This innovative approach offered a promising way to charge phones during power outages, especially in disaster-prone areas of the Philippines. Despite numerous unsuccessful trials and the challenges posed by the pandemic, our determination remained unwavering. This experience showcased my resilience and reaffirmed my commitment to using technical knowledge to address practical problems, while also enhancing my research skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities-all of which will be invaluable in my future studies and projects in the Global Advanced Engineering major in AI Software, where experimentation, data analysis, and innovation play essential roles.

This same drive led me to examine how AI and technology are reshaping my community and ultimately motivated me to apply for this program. If we are the ones who will shape the future, then I want to be equipped with the right knowledge and skills to do so responsibly. This is also where I see a meaningful connection between Korea and the Philippines: two nations bound by a growing partnership in innovation and technology, one I hope to help build.

South Korea, in particular, captivated me by demonstrating how technology can transform the way people live and work. I saw this most clearly in Pangyo Techno Valley, often called the "Silicon Valley of Korea." Its thriving ecosystem of AI, gaming, and software companies inspired me to grasp how simple ideas can develop into technologies that influence millions of lives. The success of companies such as Naver and Kakao also showed me how software can extend beyond screens and become part of everyday life. For me, Korea became more than a destination for advanced technology-it became a source of inspiration for the kind of engineer I hope to become. This realization strengthened my desire to study in Korea and led me to Hosan University. I was drawn to its AI Software major in the Department of Global Engineering because the program's hands-on, interdisciplinary approach reflects how I learn best: by understanding concepts and applying them through practical projects. I am especially interested in strengthening my programming, problem-solving, and AI skills while learning how software can address real-world needs.

With that vision in mind, I set my sights on the Global Korea Scholarship as a concrete way to pursue it. I have applied twice and been rejected both times. Still, I chose not to give up because the goals that matter most are rarely achieved on the first try, and I know I have more to offer than those two attempts could show. I took the initiative to strengthen my technical foundation through the Department of Information and Communications Technology's self-paced programs, Prompt Like an Engineer and JavaScript Essentials, where I learned how AI and large language models work, when to rely on AI versus traditional tools, and how to verify AI-generated results responsibly. I also enrolled in Korean Massive Open Online Courses (K-MOOC) in engineering offered by various Korean universities, giving me a deeper understanding of the curriculum I hope to continue at Hosan University. These experiences helped me move beyond simply using technology toward understanding how it can be developed and applied. Through programming, AI-related learning, and engineering courses, I began building the technical foundation I hope to deepen through formal study in AI Software.

As I pursued my senior high school education in the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) strand, a pivotal moment arose during Grade 12. I delved into applied subjects, including Empowerment Technology and Media and Information Literacy, which provided a strong foundation in computer history, essential digital skills, and the transformative power of technology. One highlight of my Grade 12 experience was being recognized and entrusted with a leadership role in our research project, focused on financial literacy. As the leader, working under pressure was no easy task; I had to juggle multiple responsibilities throughout the research process, including conducting interviews, revising papers, and fostering a positive mindset to ensure our work was well-received during the defense. Although these challenges were daunting, they ultimately became a source of strength and growth, paving the way for me to advance an advocacy in my community that I am determined to continue.

I learned the value of perseverance not only in the classroom but also at home. With my parents having no stable employment to support our household, we turned to selling homemade ice candies, a Filipino frozen treat, as our primary source of income. I helped sell the products to make ends meet, which became my first work experience while continuing my studies. I learned to communicate with customers, manage limited resources, take responsibility for my work, and remain productive despite difficult circumstances. These skills continue to influence how I approach challenges in both academics and my personal goals. Despite these circumstances, I remained committed to my education, ensuring that my academic performance did not suffer and refusing to let them hinder my progress. I managed my coursework diligently, often staying up late to complete reports and projects. Even during moments that tested my time-management skills and perseverance, I remained resilient. I consistently achieved academic honors, and I will always cherish the pride I felt each time I walked across the stage and heard my name announced among the honorees. These experiences fueled my determination to pursue excellence, push my limits, and remain steadfast in achieving my dreams.

As I stand on the threshold of this journey, my goal is to strengthen my technical expertise and learn from engineers, innovators, and professors in South Korea. I aim to transform this knowledge into practical solutions that address society's growing reliance on technology with integrity, innovation, and purpose. I am particularly interested in exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and software engineering, focusing on areas such as machine learning, intelligent automation, computer vision, cybersecurity, and data-driven systems. I aspire to develop intelligent applications that are accessible, reliable, and responsive to real-world challenges. Ultimately, I want to become a software professional who adapts to technological change while actively shaping it. By bringing the knowledge and experience I gain in South Korea back to the Philippines, I hope to create software solutions that address local needs and make everyday systems more accessible, efficient, and human-centered. My goal is not simply to build the future, but to build a future that serves people.

I have to say, you have a strong background in robotics and computer science, but you have not fully utilized the benefits that come with being an Ai master. Did you participate in the Hour of Code training? There was no mention of that in your essay. I was particularly looking for a reference to the community training requirement of the program. Were you unable to participate in those 2 steps after the AI master training program? Those 2 steps would have helped immensely in strengthening your presentation.

Right now, the essay is weak because it does not address the AI software training and accomplishments that would have been a pconsiderable boost to your scholarship application. Your AI foundation is lacking the impressive information that should have come with your being AI master. What happened after that training series? Why is it not as notable in this essay as it should have been?

The two aspects are in relation to community activities. The first, is the coordination you had to do with the local do with the local government, the hosting school or organization, and other entities. The second is the actual training where you had to act as the trainer of the participants. By discussing that, you directly tie into the AI software, significant experiences, and extra curricular activities. These areas would circle back to the discussion about the significant experiences that influenced you in the field of AI learning and propagation. This will be the community activity that your information needs to show that you have been developing your AI skills in a manner that benefits the community and positively promotes the use of AI.
