PERSONAL STATEMENT
As society continues to evolve, so does technology. Technological advancement has grown alongside the way people live their lives. One of the developments that has become increasingly integrated into human life is the digital world. It has gradually become an essential part of how people build relationships, express themselves, store information, and leave traces that form part of their identities. Yet unlike the physical world, the digital environment often conceals threats behind invisible boundaries. This raised a question that has continued to shape the way I see technology: when technology has become inseparable from human life, how can we ensure that everyone feels safe in their digital lives?
In my first year of junior high school, a link my mother received became the beginning of an experience that changed the way I viewed the digital world. Unaware that the link was part of a scam, she opened it. Several days later, we realized that her WhatsApp account had been taken over. The perpetrator began calling people in her contact list and spreading false information. For the following weeks, my mother had to warn our family, friends, and people around her not to trust the calls or information they received. At the time, I witnessed how a problem that began with a single link could disrupt not only personal information, but also the sense of calm and trust between people who knew one another. Amid the confusion and disruption, one question continued to occupy my mind. If a perpetrator could disappear behind a screen, would what had happened disappear as well? Or could there always be traces that, when pieced together, could reveal the truth? I came to realize that technology can never truly be separated from human life. What happens in the digital space can extend into the real world, affecting relationships, security, and the peace of those around us. The more I learned about technology, the more I wanted to understand what lies beneath it.
While our lives had not yet fully recovered from the incident, I entered a pesantren. There, I immersed myself in various activities. I was entrusted with a position in the language division of OSDA, a student organization at my pesantren. Through this role, I learned to coordinate language activities, guide younger students, and ensure that various language programs were carried out effectively. I also participated in Amaliyah Tadris, where I took on the role of a teacher and taught in English.
Amid these activities and responsibilities, my thoughts would sometimes return to my mother and what we had experienced. When she came to visit me at the pesantren, I was reminded that an action that may seem small in the digital world can leave a much greater impact on others. This led me to think again about what actually happens behind a digital incident and whether the traces it leaves behind can help uncover the truth. I have always believed that every problem has a solution, even if time is sometimes needed to lead us toward the answer.
Of the fields I explored, Smart Security became the one that best aligned with me because it not only focuses on protecting systems from digital threats, but also develops a comprehensive understanding of how digital security is maintained before, during, and after an incident. I chose Smart Security because I wanted to understand digital security as a whole, and within it, I found a strong interest in Digital Forensics. To me, this field is not simply about identifying perpetrators or collecting evidence, but about understanding how digital traces can reveal what actually happened. From traces that may initially appear disconnected, a complete picture can gradually emerge, turning assumptions into something that can be proven. This understanding made me realize that digital security is not only about preventing threats. When an attack has already occurred, understanding what happened is also essential to protecting people, restoring trust, and helping prevent similar incidents from happening again. This realization made Smart Security no longer merely a field of study I wanted to pursue, but a goal I am committed to pursuing.
After discovering a field that truly aligned with who I am, I began looking back at the experiences I had undertaken and recognizing how they could support the path ahead. My interest in understanding people led me to participate in an online Psychology Olympiad. Through it, I was introduced to the basics of psychology and began to understand that people have different needs, behaviors, and ways of thinking. To broaden my understanding of the technical side, I began studying the fundamentals of Python programming through Coursera. At the same time, I continued developing my language skills as part of my preparation to study in an international environment. These three areas became important foundations for me in pursuing Smart Security: understanding people, developing technical skills, and learning to adapt. These are the foundations I hope to continue developing throughout my academic journey.
To continue this process, I looked for an academic environment that would allow me to develop these foundations more deeply. While exploring the GKS guidelines on the Study in Korea website to find a program aligned with my academic goals, my attention was drawn to a name I had never encountered before: Smart Security at Konyang University. I then explored the program further. After studying its curriculum and comparing it with several other options, I became increasingly certain that Smart Security at Konyang University aligned with the direction I wanted to pursue. From there, my desire to study in Korea grew stronger.
Korea became my study destination because its developing digital environment provides a meaningful context in which to study cybersecurity as a field that continues to evolve. For me, the opportunity to learn within an active digital ecosystem would allow me to understand how security must continually adapt to protect people's lives. Beyond deepening my knowledge in the field I have chosen, I also want to broaden my perspective. Studying in a different environment will challenge me to communicate, adapt, and collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds.
At Konyang University, I hope to deepen my knowledge of Smart Security, particularly my interest in Digital Forensics, while developing practical skills that will prepare me for a professional career in digital security. If Konyang University gives me the opportunity to grow alongside its community, I want to use that opportunity to continue developing my abilities and broaden my perspective on digital security. In the future, I hope the skills I build will allow me to contribute to addressing digital security challenges through my professional journey and through cooperation connecting Indonesia and Korea.
