Studentship is one unforgettable part of life which anyone would love. It becomes enjoyable when required financial assistance is available; be it for education or for girlfriend, though parents/government provide only for education. When finance becomes a burden, government assists in the form of Pell grants. This federal grant is offered to low-income families only after the required terms and conditions are met.

In order to qualify for the grants, the student should satisfy few basic criteria listed here below.

1. The student must be a US citizen, permanent resident or fall under an eligible classification of non-citizen
2. Legal non-citizen should satisfy any of the following criteria
a. Conditional permanent citizen
b. Refugee
c. Parolee
d. Asylum grantee
e. Cuban-Haitian entrant with arrival-departure record
3. Have a valid Social Security Number
4. Have a high school diploma or GED or prove the benefits of the training
5. Make satisfactory academic progress
6. Sign FAFSA form that there is no default of any federal student loan or the student does not owe money on any federal grant.
7. Sign FAFSA form that the grant would be used only for educational purpose.
8. Register with selective service if the student is a male between 18 to 25 years.
9. Suspension of grant is possible for conviction under federal or state law for sale or possession of illegal drugs.

The government determines the financial need by using the Expected Family Contribution formula. This determination is done once the Pell grant requirements are met. The maximum eligible amount is $5500.

The Pell grant requirements as it is today are derived from the Higher Education Act of 1965. It was named Pell grant, honoring the Rhode Island senator "Claiborne Pell" for his dedication towards the higher education of students. As years pass, the requirements may change, but the basic philosophy remains the same - Better education for all.

You could add to that that grants are different than loans, as they are given to the student without the assumption that he/she should pay it back. That gives the student a peace of mind and so less stress and less pressure. Talk about what that means to the family, in the cases where the family is in a financial need and so on.. Talk about who it will reduces the need for the students to enter the workforce rather than go into a higher education, think about how that will improve the society and so on.

Hope that helps.
