Statement of Purpose for IMSISS Erasmus Scholarship

Word limit-600

In 2021, the Global Peace Index ranked Nigeria 146th, among 163 independent nations and territories in the world. Subsequently, Nigeria is rated as the 8th less peaceful country in Africa, with insecurities such as insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, communal clashes, threatening the unity and sovereignty of my country. The reasons for these security dilemma in the country are as a result of vague security policies, lack of security analysts and intelligence experts, and lack of surveillance systems, etc. The need for trained experts are my motivation for considering higher studies in the field of Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies.

My undergraduate degree in International Relation at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University equipped me with vast knowledge on multidisciplinary concepts such as; global politics, terrorism and International security, peace studies, research analysis, etc. My undergraduate thesis focused on the roles of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in regional integration, and the feasibility of the ECOWAS proposed monetary policy in West Africa, with a comparative analysis of the EU monetary policy. The general research skills I garnered during this period would be beneficial to my research program. Moreover, modules such as Terrorism, International security, and Peace Studies exposed me to fundamentals of security and peace studies. I got practical knowledge about my coursework by participating in online peace conferences such as the Global Peace Foundation conferences, and Pan African Youth Forums, which deepened my understanding of global security and updates me with current happenings. Graduating as top 10% of my class, with a reputation for being among the top 5 most outspoken females during class discussions, seminars, and presentations, is a testament to how much effort and passion I have towards this field.

Beyond my academic exploits, I was actively involved in several extracurricular activities, which included participation in student unionism. As director of welfare in 2017, and vice president of my student association, I learned to apply leadership and apt listening abilities to execute sustainable projects, which included organizing summer schools for high school students and career talk shows for members.

I started my professional career with an internship opportunity at Girl-Child Rights Advocacy NGO as a child support intern, during which I initiated a security and emergency awareness program themed My Security and I", inspired by the tragic event of the kidnap of over 200 Chibok school girls in 2014. The program spanned 2016-2018 and impacted over 1500 students from 5 schools in Asaba community. Also, I volunteered as community engagement officer at Youth-Up Foundation Asaba, and contributed in enlightening locals on SDG related programs. My experiences sharpened my communication skills, and interaction with people from diverse multicultural backgrounds.

An International Masters Degree in Security Intelligence and Strategic Studies at the University of Glasgow, which is rated top 100 Universities in the world, and top 1% in security and international relations rated courses in the United Kingdom, will be a boost to my academic and professional career, and will furnish me with the critical and analytical skills needed to develop security solutions through research. The mobility nature of the program, involving studies at Dublin City University and Charles University, will improve my understanding of the course from various intellectual capacities. I wish to focus my research interest on the topic: Insecurity and Peace Building Strategies in Africa, and leverage on the world class research facilities at the universities, to present a scholarly work that would contribute towards policy making in Nigeria.

I believe that this program is the opportunity I need to become a globally recognized peace and security expert.

Exactly where does your career stand at the moment? How does your current work position require the need for advanced studies overseas? Whatexactly in the purpose of your study of the course, at this university, in this country? Information about the ranking and states of the university does not share relevant information with the reviewer. Talking about where you started your career is not as relevant nor purpose directing as connecting higher studies with a career target after studies. The essay fails to consider these important points. Instead, it focuses on early academic exposure and unprofessional or amateur / internship experience which, though informative, does not connect to current career achievements, nor future success plans. Correcting these portions will make for a more proper SOP narrative. Focus the purpose on your research topic and why it is important to Nigeria. Why do you have to be the one to do it for your country?
