Leadership essay: Overcome difficulties

would greatly appreciate your assistance in reviewing my writings. I want to apply to scholarship in England for graduate. The prompt is about leadership.

Six months before we were due to welcome delegates from across Indonesia, we still did not know whether we could afford to hold the conference.
When I was appointed Vice Leader and Secretary of the Craft Student Forum, a national conference hosted by my university, I inherited a committee facing significant challenges. Communication between divisions was fragmented, responsibilities were unclear, and the university's funding covered only a small portion of the budget required to organise the event. That uncertainty became the starting point for everything I learned about leadership. Rather than waiting for funding to magically appear, I worked closely with the team leader to turn our budget shortfall into a problem we could solve rather than simply endure. I proposed establishing a dedicated fundraising team from scratch and helped coordinate its strategy beyond traditional sponsorships. We designed and sold official event merchandise, secured a booth during the main event, and promoted the campaign across our network. What began as a stopgap measure became one of the event's biggest successes, raising approximately IDR 70 million and providing the financial resources needed to cover catering, logistics, and the student exhibition, ultimately enabling us to welcome delegates from across the nation.
Money, though, was only half the battle. With over 100 student coordinators spread across multiple divisions, friction was inevitable miscommunication, overlapping responsibilities, coordinators burning out under pressure. I found myself stepping into the role of mediator almost daily. I restructured how we communicated, decentralizing decision-making so division heads could act quickly without waiting on approval chains, and introduced short daily sync-ups so problems surfaced while they were still small. Just as important was staying attentive to morale checking in with people not just about tasks, but about how they were holding up under the weight of it all.

By the time the event opened, the disorganization and funding anxiety of those first weeks felt distant. The event ran smoothly and was regarded as a strong showcase of what our university could deliver on a national stage. Looking back, I don't think the result was really about the merchandise sales or the sync-up meetings themselves. It was about learning that leadership is less about having every resource in place from the start, and more about how deliberately you respond when they aren't, turning constraints into structure, and structure into trust.

You do not need to overwhelm the reviewer with too many leadership scenarios. One highly reflective situation womill suffice. In this case, the financing situation presented is more dire, in immediate need of leadership and definitely showed off your leadership skills. There are however, a few things that you can do to improve that presentation.

First, make sure that you highlight how you worked with the team to solve the fundraising problem. Show that you are a democratic leader because right now, it sounds like a dictatorial leadership situation. Show openness to suggestions, camaraderie, and trickle down leadership highlights whenever you can.

The 2nd scenario will confuse the reviewer. It is not as effective as the financial scenario. You can revise the essay to remove that reference so you can use the freed up word count to better develop your leadership explanation.
