As a kid, I would always beg my grandparents for 'tò he', a traditional Vietnamese clay figure made from rice flour. I was amazed by how artisans shaped rice clay into characters from Vietnamese folklore and fairy tales. This has sparked my interest in Vietnamese traditional values. However, growing up, I witnessed these values being replaced by foreign cultures, slowly vanishing from the streets. Therefore, I chose to study Marketing to preserve and share my culture with younger audiences and global audiences.
I was a team leader in the Your World competition held by the British Council. The competition was about Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. At the time, it was challenging for me as the A-Level exams were underway. Moreover, some members were procrastinating, slowing down the team's progress.
Nevertheless, I learned how to manage my time to endure the workload and maintain my study progress. I did not condone the half-hearted attempts, so I dismissed some members when they remained indifferent after discussion. I also replanned the workload as we had fewer but more passionate people.
Members had different approaches to the topic. After listening to every idea and countless discussions, I decided to use traditional storytelling to express our take on the topic. Furthermore, I combined some aspects of Vietnamese learning traditions into the video. Ultimately, the team was honorably awarded the 'New Rising Star' Prize. Even though it was not the highest award, the team did their best despite the ongoing exam and replanning.
As a NUS student, I hope not only to preserve and share my culture, but also other cultures with the global community. NUS would be the next step in my journey to spread my culture globally through the genuine connections, vibrant activities, and communities at the university and in Singapore. Receiving a scholarship from NUS would give me financial comfort, as well as time and resources to focus on my studies and goals.
