Hi, please help me draft and polish my motivation letter below. I greatly appreciate your help and time. Thank you.

DAAD Scholarship application

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am writing to apply for the DAAD Scholarship LLM in Intellectual Property Law at the Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC) and seeking a change of career path. I am a licensed lawyer in the Philippines working for the Philippine National Government from 9 November 2020 until the present. Prior to my public service stint, I worked as an Associate Lawyer from 14 June 2019 until 31 October 2020. My combined work experience in the private and public sectors is two (2) years, four (4) months, and fifteen (15) days as of writing this letter. I graduated from the San Sebastian College - Recoletos (SSCR) College of Law in 2018.

The main reason for my application to MIPLC is to start a new career path, which ultimately leads to establishing my own law firm specializing in Intellectual Property Law. In law school, my favorite subjects were Corporation Law and Copyright and Intellectual Property Law. My passion for Intellectual Property and Corporation/Competition Law impelled me to take my internships in intellectual property (IP) at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Intellectual Property Division and law firm specializing in intellectual property law named Gancayco Balasbas & Associates. These internships lasted for two (2) months where I gained relevant experience in intellectual property law such as legal research, preparation of pleadings, client interviews, and in-depth analysis of IP in the Philippines. My legal knowledge in IP was strengthened when I worked on IP cases as an Associate Lawyer having successfully registered trademarks representing senior citizens and a certain imported drug. In the Philippines, trademark registration is a rare option for many organizations because the majority of the population does not realize the importance of protecting their IP rights. My skills in commercial law were also bolstered when I handled a case on intra-corporate controversy concerning the refusal of one corporation to register the stocks of the beneficial owner of more than fifty (50) percent shares. In that case, we successfully argued the granting of mandamus to compel the said corporation to register the shares of stocks.

It was while taking up IP as a subject in law school that my interest in IP practice was born. The book I used for our IP subject in law school became my bible in understanding the workings of the field. I would scribble over its text and highlight important points from the author. My degree in Communication Arts was also beneficial in my pursuit to practice IP. I consider this to be my formative years in my exposure to IP as part of everyday life. The Civil Code of the Philippines provides that ownership is acquired by intellectual creation, and this is where IP law comes in to protect a person's ownership over his or her property - whether trademark, patent or copyright.

MIPLC is considered to be one of the best universities in Germany and has an excellent reputation in the field of IP. I believe that MIPLC will help me start a career in IP because of its top-of-the-line facilities and international faculty, which is, unfortunately, lacking in my home country. I hope to achieve a deep and well-rounded knowledge in IP whilst studying the LL.M. IP at MIPLC. The LL.M. will help me in my plans to establish my own IP practice in the Philippines and develop global awareness with the advanced knowledge I hope to gain upon completing the said program.

I believe that I am well-suited for the LL.M. IP program because I am a hard-working professional with a profound appreciation of knowledge. I am capable of analyzing complex facts and principles and applying them in real-life scenarios. Lastly, I have a global mindset that enables me to adapt to different jurisdictions of IP and the law in general that will expand my legal knowledge.

I thank you for your time in reading my letter.

Very truly yours,

Annie H.B.

The first paragraph repeats information that can be gleaned from the applicant's CV. Remove it. Delete all repeated cV references as these are not considered a part of the motivation letter. Revise the 2nd paragraph to become a more suitable opening statement instead. The second paragraph is a lengthy introduction to the law background of the applicant, again it lacks a motivational focus. These information can be found in the CV. The letter of motivation should not be mistaken for an expanded CV or CV in essay form. In fact, this presentation does not contain a proper reference to career motivations, this letter is totally useless.

The second half? It fails to present believable information about the university choice in relation to future career plans. It appears that the applicant has not read the guidelines in relation to developing a proper DAAD motivational letter You better do that before starting on a new version.

@Holt
Thanks for the honest review. Really appreciate the inputs. I will have to thoroughly read the DAAD Scholarship requirements. May I please take this opportunity to ask for inputs on another application - EM IMSISS program? Thank you.
