"A conflict far away can become a conflict too close to home if not well prepared for". Words of former President of Ghana Nana Akuffo-Addo. These words reflect my daily experiences as a young officer serving in a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) unit deployed along the border with Burkina Faso. I have seen how insurgency and extremism in the sub-region especially Burkina Faso have affected the lives of nearby communities and pose potential spill over to Ghana. Based on these experiences, I seek advanced knowledge to better understand these threats and develop rapid response mechanisms. The International Master's in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) with its integrated focus on its five themes, offers exactly the platform I need to strengthen my capabilities.
My academic and professional background has given me a firm foundation for postgraduate study. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology and Psychology and Postgraduate Diploma in Defence and Security, providing me good analytical approach to security issues. My professional military training in Manoeuvre Captains Career Course at the Manoeuvre Centre of Excellence, USA and Diploma in military studies from the Ghana Military Academy has enhanced my understanding of global security dynamics valuable to the programme. Having served as Intelligence Officer in my unit, the programme provides a theoretical medium to enhance my capabilities.
Operationally, I served as Company Commander for Koch Temporary Operation Base on United Nations Mission in South Sudan where I operated in complex, multicultural terrain that required diplomacy, ethical judgement and working with diverse teams. Based on intelligence and threat analysis, I carried out interventions such as veterinary services to herdsmen from fighting tribes which reduced bi-weekly cattle rustling reprisal attacks from 15 to 6. I carried out educational outreaches to Protection of Civilian camps to educate displaced children. This leadership role earned me a commendation from the United Nations Office for Peacekeeping Strategic Partnership. These practical experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of integrating intelligence, strategy and community engagement in addressing insecurity. These experiences will inform my contribution to academic discussion and teamwork on the programme.
Beyond my professional experience, I have engaged in projects such as Strengthening Systems for Resilience against Extremism organised by West African Centre for Counter-Extremism. Through this project, I worked on community resilience, early warning and counter-insurgency frameworks. These areas align with IMSISS themes particularly theme 2,3 and 4 which are critical for my intended focus in community resilience as a pre-emptive counter-extremism tool. Throughout this project, I strengthened my analytical, writing and communication skills which I intend to apply across my research, internships and joining "The Security Distillery". I intend to draw on the expertise of Dr James Fitzgerald at Dublin City University whose work in terrorism, violent extremism and counter radicalisation will support my intended dissertation focus.
As the sub-region continues to be threatened by extremism and terrorism, my intended academic focus would enable me to contribute to national security by developing an intelligence counter-extremism framework through community resilience, thereby better preparing Ghana for the fight against extremism. I envisage climbing up the ladder in the very competitive GAF in leadership roles in counter-extremism strategy. I firmly believe the programme's comprehensive curriculum, international exposure and interdisciplinary training will provide me with the tools and network to achieve my goals.
Ultimately, with my military background, combined with my intellectual curiosity, leadership qualities and unwavering passion to making meaningful impact in the field of security, the IMSISS programme will not only refine my expertise in security, intelligence and strategy but also prepare me as a frontliner officer to tackle mention threats.
