hello guys,
I have this Masters degree scholarship programme that i'm willing to apply for as soon as i am able to raise money for IELTS and when my transcript is finally released to me. I intend not to wait till all requirement is complete so i've started writing my SOP. But having found this site and known what SOP should really contain i get comfused i might be writing too long an essay. i really need to know what exatly is the standard words my essay sholud contain since it is not specified in the scholarship application instruction, someone told me it is usually between 800 to 1000 words. How true is this coz think i mine may be more than that?

Any idea pls
thanks

The rule is as short as possible to make your point, one page at the most. I would start with 800 words and scale down to 500. Remember, they will have your c.v. for the specifics of your experiences and accomplishments. Your SOP can then focus on the specifics of the scholarship program you are applying to and what makes you the best candidate to receiving it.

thanks linmark,
but i think this may be diffrient, we aren't applying direct to the scholarship board, you first apply for a programme in the university. The university will then nominate you for the scholarship if the think you are qualified. I do not even Know how to title the SOP since i am applying for the programme while hoping that i will be nominated for the awards. Besides i have read people's SOP on EF and i really think such SOP of my kind needs to be detailed.

wht d'you think?

Start by listing the specific prompt - what exactly is the scholarship you are applying for? Then list the best 3-5 titles you can come up with. After you have done that and posted it, we can work on an outline for you. Don't worry about the details yet before you have the big picture or big idea conceptualized in your mind.

That sounds like a very good idea. I would say 700 and scale down to 500, because it is hard to get rid of 300 words...

Hey, the most important thing is to provide the reader with an experience. This is what I say all the time to people. Remember your purpose. Make sure you know your purpose. The purpose is to make the reader feel surprised about the details and interestingness of your plan.

And your plan is as unique as you are, as cheesy as that sounds. It is a particular perspective on a particular industry, and it has all your personal characteristics. So... show them what you have in mind.

I think that close to 500 words is the best. Too much words will make the reader bored/lost/out of point and the story draggy. So try to go to the point and keep your sentences short. good luck
