I am writing this essay for the CommonApp. Here is the prompt: Please write an essay (250-500 words) on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below. This personal essay helps us to become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself.

Here is what I chose to right about: Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

Please give as much feedback as possible, thank you!

There are a variety of reasons people decide to pursue higher learning at the collegiate level. I am going to write about a recent event that spurred my decision to attend college. My brother Charlie was born on August 17, 2009. As the doctors were about to deliver him, there were sudden complications, and he could not breathe inside of my mom. This could have been life-threatening if the doctors didn't do an emergency C-section. All the while, I stood there, not realizing what exactly had happened. I was in shock, until one of the nurses talked to me and told me that they had to prep her for a C-section, and that I would have to wait in the waiting room for her. Only one person was allowed to go with my mom into the emergency room, and that was my step-dad. I waited nervously with my sister, anticipating the good news that I have both a new brother, and my mom. Finally, the nurse came out and talked with me for a while. She was really nice and empathetic, and told me that everything was fine and my brother and mom were in good condition. When I saw Charlie for the first time, I felt so appreciative about life, and I realized that the nurses had such an important job in making sure that they ended up happy and healthy. Everyday since this event, Charlie has motivated me to be responsible. Taking care of a younger sibling, especially a baby, requires so much responsibility. Even though I am not the parent, being a sibling is very important to my parents because they always need help. I feel very responsible and glad that my parents trust me enough to watch Charlie on my own, pick him up at daycare, prepare meals for him, etc.

Looking back on this experience, I applied for a highly competitive program run by MultiCare, called Nurse Camp. If you do not know what Nurse Camp is, it is a program for high school students who have an interest in becoming an ally in the healthcare profession. This week-long camp was wonderful. It opened my eyes to what nurses really do, and I got to see some surgeries, and witness how much nurse's had an impact on the patients' lives and their families. To become a nurse, you have to go to college, and get an education so that you can take the essential classes that are required to apply for a nursing program. I believe your college can give me that core preparation to becoming a nurse.
