My current iteration of my Admission Essay to UCF:

College is an interesting thing, with it, people are able to educate and better themselves, a goal worthy in itself. However, a college education also opens an entirely new world of intellectuality and profession; a career once seemingly out of reach becomes not only possible, but probable. Denying oneself a college degree is a travesty in that not only will they be denied in these aspects, but it is symbolic in that they are denying themselves an opportunity to grow. It is for these reasons that I have decided to apply to the University of Central Florida, so that I might better myself while preparing for a future I can anticipate.

As an intelligent person, my interests are numerous and varied, a characteristic that makes choosing any one specialty a difficult task. After graduating high school I found myself at a loss without a specific career or goal in mind. I knew that I wanted to further my education through college, but with so many professions and career paths it was difficult to nail just one down. I decided that a liberal arts degree at my community college (Jefferson Community College) would be the best short term choice while I contemplate on what I would really like to do. Alas, a year passed and I decided after researching a career in video game development, that this might be the right path for me. Unfortunately, my community college offered no such program and so I turned to my eyes to Westwood College. I enrolled in an online program for another year before I came to dire realization, not only did this online program seem to be teaching me very little, I was losing interest quickly. It was at this point that I realized that I needed in-class lessons, with a professor and student body I could interact with. Once more I turned my eyes elsewhere, this time to Devry University, enrolling in a Multi Media course focused on strengthening my digital presentation skills and preparing me in some aspects for a career in the video game industry. It was here that after enough internal examination and reflection that I came to realize that I do not want a career in video gaming, but instead in art as a whole. Traditional artists are able to choose from any number of projects, from concept art and character creation in films, games and TV, to comics, manga, website, logo design, advertising and even art alone. This epiphany combined with my learning of your prestigious establishment had for the first time set me on a clear path.

After exploring your beautiful campus for myself and seeing your fully equipped art wing, it was as if fate metaphorically slapped me in the face. A traditional yet modern library decked out in classic literature while balancing an almost cyber café environment is an amazing sight to behold. The Student Union building was also quite astonishing. Every type of restaurant I could think of was on display, allowing not only variety and choice, but encouraging a social atmosphere among students and faculty. Between the on-campus strip mall, fully outfitted gym and various recreational areas, UCF boasts the most impressive facilities that I have experienced.

Through my own research, I believe that UCF is not only a college I believe I can acquire the knowledge, experience and confidence I need, but it is also a college I can feel proud to attend. Full of team spirit, a large, varied campus with jaw-dropping facilities, an impressive, fully-rounded curriculum and an enthusiastic student body and professors, UCF is an incredible establishment that boasts of inspiration. If accepted into the Studio Art and the Computer course within the Emerging Media track, I know I can feel safe in my educational choice, and promise to study hard and apply myself. With a strong education under my belt and experience to match, I know I can confidently step into the world of art as a proud member of the UCF alumni.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks
-Eric B.
