'The decision to study art' - "describe myself" for an essay

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum.. My name's Tria from Indonesia and trying to apply a scholarship to study in USA. I have to finish a personal statement 500 words top. I made it and it was too long, i succeed shrinking it but i realized that i don't really describe my self.

here it is...

The decision to study art I took after a long reflection that included studies in the faculty of medicine. In 2006 I graduated from high school and studied medicine at Maranatha Christian University. Having successfully completed one year of medicine I decided nontheless to pursue my personal interest which is art and started studying art in the same university in 2009. Although I was academically capable to finish medical school it is in art I can really be the best of myself and pursue my personal interests.

My main interests are Art History and Painting for which I believe that I already posses the basic skills that I wish to develop. I believe Art History is indisposable for those who want to have a career in the arts. I wish to have a deeper understanding of Modern Art evolution because in that era the art developed more rapidly. Modern artists experimented in new and sometimes radical ways. I took Modern Art class last year and it has become my favorite subject since and this class has awakened my interest in this subject. I wish to learn more about the development and the changes between movements and I am excited to see the actual works of art themselves to understand the concepts of modern art movements. I wish to sharpen my skills in painting and learn so much more about new media of making artworks. This will facilitate achieving my career goal as an artist.

As an artist and academic I wish to become a good painter, art historian, and art critic. I wish to obtain a doctoral degree so I can have thorough knowledge of art history which would be extremely valuable for my career goals in both critical and creative ways.

USA has an ideal educational system and excellent program that relates to my interests. I wish to sharpen my skill to communicate in English, to experience new cultures, and expand the art knowledge itself. I believe that this scholarship will be important for my career goal as an artist.

thats it.. i want to add "describe myself" but i don't really know how. but i tried.. here it is.. all critics are welcome..

I grew up in a broken family. My parents were divorced when i was 6 years old. I live with my mother and I am very close to her. I have one brother and he moved in with me and my mother when he was in high school. I always taught to be an independent person and i had many responsibilities since young age.
