Leaders are created by the demands that are placed on them.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement
and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position,
you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how
these considerations shape your position.

It has long been a hot debate over whether leaders are created by demands or, on the contrary, demands are created by those leaders. Either way makes a good sense, but the former statement seems to be more convincing because we are after all human beings; and our capability of affecting others could not afford to change the preferences of this whole group. In this way, it is more likely that the masses of common people are those who have the real power, and leaders are just their spokesman, so to speak.

The existence of leaders proves that groups need someone to stand for their interest, defend them and satisfy their needs. Actually, any group could have a leader, by definition. For instance, a class could have a president, a club could have its chairman, and labor unions, even the country as a whole does, and should have its leader. The larger the group is, the more noises its group members are going to make, and that's why a leader are created to have a unified voice. The necessity of setting up a leader is undoubted, since the group members may have received different levels of education, and their ideas may vary from individual to individual, if they were all to express their own opinions, the listeners will be confused. Moreover, the time required to solve their problems will be hence extended to an excessive length. Therefore, to have an elected leader is necessary for most groups, especially big ones.

It is easy to understand that the leaders are chosen mainly by the demands of the voters instead of some other factors like reverence, familiarity or fanaticism. Surely these factors also account for some circumstances, but deep in these constituents hearts they care more about their own interests. Take Franklin Roosevelt as an example, he was the only president who has served four terms as the president of the United States. Why could he manage that? Just because he is handsome and he is good at speeches, or because he had win the sympathy from the American civilians? Clearly he has won the trust from the constituents for what he had done to help them survive Great Depression, and these people believed that he would continue to do something that would help improve their living conditions. Self-regard is the first and foremost reason why leaders should exist.

Sometimes a leader do act as someone who creates the demands for their people, say fashion leaders, they are the trendsetters and they tell their people what is good and what to buy. It seems the rule of what mentioned above does not work. However, if you see it from another perspective, the trendsetters are actually satisfying the fashionable people by offering them something new and appealing. In this way, they are not creating new demands, instead, they are just chosen to meet the customers' old and perpetual need of new, popular things. Apple Inc was considered a very innovative, ingenious firm and the leader of the industry because it never followed other companies' devices styles, they create their own style. Yet this fact does not conflict with the rules we said. All these creative devices are merely something to appeal to the users' pursuit of fresh things.

Given all reasons included above, we may safely jump to the conclusion that leaders are indeed created in order to meet people's demands. No matter potent or ineffectual, leaders are chosen by their own people, and they should do their best to cater to their taste or they will be spurned.

I have taken the GRE before and this is very well written. You should do fine in the essay portion of the exam. Just make sure you are timing yourself when you are practicing since you might not have time to think about your essay and write this much.

Good luck with the GRE!
