- Florida State University is more than just a world-class academic institution preparing you for a future career. We are a caring community of well-rounded individuals who embrace leadership, learning, service, and global awareness. With this in mind, which of these characteristics appeals most to you and why?
While all of these characteristics are admirable and vital to a world-class academic institution like FSU, I personally feel that leadership is the most appealing characteristic. Growing up, my father was an officer in the United States Air Force and I was able to observe firsthand how important leadership was in my Dad's successful career as a Lieutenant Colonel.
My parents have always instilled in me a strong sense of leadership in all aspects of life, which has helped prepare me to become the captain of my lacrosse team. As captain, I am not just a member of the team, but expected to be a leader on and off the field, a role model in my community, and a conduit between the players and coaches. By the end of the season, I had developed immensely as an athlete and had attained more responsibility and leadership skills. My experience as captain taught me to take charge and manage a group of people which is not an easy task.
I also understand that leadership is essential in today's job market. With so many college graduates unable to find a job in their field of study, qualities like leadership are crucial in competing in today's demanding marketplace. In order to be a successful business, management desires to hire personnel that are capable of solving difficult problems and leading people to accomplish a company's goals. Once accepted to FSU, I hope to take advantage of opportunities available on campus to become a better leader. I feel leadership is not a characteristic people are born with, but something that is gained through real life experiences.
I strongly value an academic institution that stresses leadership, and creates an environment where numerous opportunities exist so I can become a more rounded leader. After graduation from FSU, I plan to either join or start my own small business. In order for a small business to be successful, employees must work together as a team and share an entrepreneur spirit. This requires strong leadership throughout the company, and this is why I chose leadership as the characteristic that appeals most to me.
