"My life reflects intellectual strength" - FSU Application

Prompt: For almost one hundred years, the Latin words "Vires, Artes, Mores" have been the guiding philosophy behind Florida State University. Vires signifies strength of all kinds - moral, physical, and intellectual; Artes alludes to the beauty of intellectual pursuits as exemplified in skill, craft, or art; Mores refers to character, custom, or tradition. Describe how one or more of the values embodied in these concepts are reflected in your life.

Florida State's philosophy is guided by the three Latin words "Vires, Artes, Mores". Throughout my life, I feel that I best represent only two words out of the three, "Virus" and "Mores". It has made me strive to be strong in academics and have a good character.

"Vires" symbolizes strength of many different kinds. My life reflects intellectual strength. During all of my schooling I have endeavored to get an "A" on all of my report cards. But it wasn't just the letter that I was working to get. I worked hard because it felt good to know that hard work can get you anything as long as your focus is in the right place. Many of my classmates seek me for help, whether its Spanish work or just advice about staying focused in school. The feeling I get after my classmates come to me is so invigorating that it makes me work harder. My devotion to academics has built me to be the person that I am today. Throughout school, I have had to face some challenges, but my dedication has helped me overcome them. I can proudly say that "Vires" has embodied me to conquer all of my challenges.

"Mores" symbolizes someone's character, customs, or traditions. Teachers, fellow students, and family friends have always told me that I have good character. I look at life in an optimistic way. My positive energy normally brings me success, as well as others. I have been involved in numerous toy, clothing, and food drives. My first drive was freshman year of high school and it was a toy drive. The entire school was bringing in numerous toys for under privileged children. I was secretary of the Junior Prestige Club and to show my leadership, I signed up to hand out the toys. We arrive at Gulfstream Race Track and there is a huge line of children of all ages waiting to receive one of the only toys they would ever have. The entire experience was so moving. The day that I brought in the toys I knew that I was helping children, but when I was the one who physically gave them the toy it was life altering. Every child looked at me with a twinkle in their eye and wouldn't stop thanking me. It was so touching that when I gave the last gift of the night to a little girl I began to cry. I wasn't crying because I felt bad, I was crying because watching all those children made me realize how fortunate I have been my entire life. You don't realize what you have until you help someone that doesn't have nearly as much as you. I learned to bring this lesson with me everywhere I go, including Florida State University.

Florida State University would give me the opportunity to grow with just three words, "Vires, Artes, and Mores". I hope that I would be able to show you my "Vires" and "Mores". GO NOLES!
