"Do you want to join a big project?" Cuong, one of my best friends, told me. It is a promising project and I was persuaded at all. In June, 2010, from many different countries, we came together to do our first big project: a website about college and universities for Vietnamese students.
One by one, 13 other Amsers (students of Hanoi Amsterdam high school) were convinced to join his project. The concept of the project is making a website about universities all over the world to provide information in Vietnamese for students who want to study abroad. In Vietnam, many students have a dream about studying abroad. They usually use searching tools to find information about universities or scholarships, still, not many of them are able to find enough information that they need. This web is place where they can find any information of many universities and college such as scholar ship, financial aid, rank et cetera. We started with American universities. Cuong and I were developers who took responsibilities for creating, administrating and protecting this website, while the others had to find information about universities.
Despite the fact that we are excited to do this project, we did not have enough knowledge in creating web. Although I am the only member who has computer science as a major in the team, I had never created a website or even studied Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) before. Nevertheless, I felt that it is my responsibility to lead my teammates in this specific part. Along with a lot of help from my basic programming abilities, as well as my independent-learning skill, my knowledge in HTML was significantly improved after one month. At that time, I was able to construct and administrate the website, and I was glad to be an active member of this ambitious project.
This project is a chance for me to learn new skill, experience new role. Teamwork is the first thing that I was aware of .15 people-15 characters work together. It is really a challenge for us to overcome. In a team, although we work independently, we work for one purpose. I also knew that I can not lean on someone in the team to accomplish my work; nonetheless, I can share one part of my work. It is a reason why we have to work in team. Additionally, How to be a good leader is the most valuable thing I gained from this project. Cuong has studied in America so I was a leader in Vietnam. At first, members of team worked with enthusiasms but it did not last in a long time. I order them finish their work on time arbitrarily but I realized that leader do not mean always make an order. Sometime, leader has to learned how to sympathy with other member of the team. Being awareness of this, I encouraged and re-allocated them to do other part of project which is suitable for each situation of each member.
This summer when we constructed this website is the beneficial time that I have had. Now, our website has been being under-constructed. It was stopped by some reason such as application. However, we strongly believe that we will finish this project next summer.
