When choosing a college, you are choosing an intellectual community and a place where you believe that you can live, learn, and flourish. To this end, the Board of Admission is interested in knowing your reasons for applying to Wellesley College and how Wellesley will help you to realize your personal and academic goals.
I have lived in Nigeria for several years, and I have been exposed to the beliefs that a woman's sole purpose in life is to be married and to take care of her family. Upon moving to America, I noticed that although women here are more independent, they are constantly striving to prove their worth in a society where like Nigeria, their male counterparts still dominate them. I believe that being in the Wellesley environment, where there is considerable commitment to women, will enable me develop the confidence I need to excel not only intellectually and socially in my school community but also on a global scale. Influential in my decision to apply to Wellesley is the fact that it is the alma mater to Hilary Clinton, a woman whose actions and personality is an inspiration to women everywhere including myself. Her bravery and determination are examples of what I hope to gain from Wellesley's ability to adequately empower its females for the outside world.
In addition to female empowerment, at Wellesley, I believe I will be given the opportunity to be innovative and creative. I contemplated this when I visited the campus and noticed as I walked through it, a few bicycles on the side of the road wrapped in pink neon tape, from the onset, I found this funny but I was later told that this was a club incentive and found this very impressive and also practical as it would help me get around campus without having to walk long distances. More over, studying at Wellesley will expose me to a body of diverse and unique women who I hope to impact positively while learning about their various backgrounds and offering information about mine. With Wellesley's extensive study abroad program, I hope to enhance my knowledge of Spanish and improve my interpersonal skills as I immerse myself in a country abroad. On top of all this, while making me a well-rounded woman, Wellesley will provide me with what I need to empower women back home in Nigeria who still feel like they belong in the shadow of their male equals.
