Statement of Purpose
"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail".
This quote by the American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson is one quote I heard
many times growing up and I have started living by it in my daily life. Trying to distinguish
myself from others and standout from the crowd is one thing I like to do since I was young. The
idea of making myself more marketable is very appealing to me. And an MBA will surely help
accelerate that.
I took inspiration from these wise words. Starting from living the majority of my life in Saudi
Arabia, to finishing my undergraduate degree in Finance over at Portland State University, I
have always liked to have my own opinion about things, and I try to not go the same direction as
everyone. It is my nature, and it is what makes me who I am. It is all about being unique.
I think one of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I
posses. I'm an international student from Saudi Arabia, who lived his first three years in Arizona
which made me experience different cultures. I'm also a Finance student that appreciates art,
photography, good music and have a great interest in Technology. I also have a great passion for
traveling and exploring different cultures around the world. Sports and especially soccer is also
something I love to do, and I have played tournaments in Europe and the Middle East growing
up. But more importantly is my enthusiasm with the business world. All of these have given me
a broader look on things, and I strongly believe that even some are not related to the program
I'm applying to, all of them will influence my graduate work as they all involve dedication, hard
work and success.
Another characteristic that I have is helping people and building awareness about social or health
topics that concern me and many others. I have been active in volunteering with the Oregon
Food Bank where we helped in collecting food and raising more than $600,000 for people in
need. Another activity I was solely involved in is creating an online page that focuses on raising
money and spreading awareness about breast cancer as it has affected different members of my
family. I managed to gain more than 900 followers in a short period of time and it is growing day
by day.
My family has been an inspiration to me. Starting with my father who has a PHD in
Computer Science and who works as manager in the world's largest oil corporation (Aramco).
And my mother who has her masters in Teaching, to my sister who is in her last year of medical
school. They all have inspired me to dream big and achieve the best education available.
Education is very important in my family and I promised myself I will not stop until I make
them proud. My goal of obtaining a Masters of Business Administration will add value to my
experience and will be extremely beneficial to me in my future.
When taking a look at my GPA, it could be not as high as other applicants, but that's
mainly due to me having a hard time adapting to a new language and an independent life when
I first came to the U.S in my freshman year, as well as having my mother diagnosed with breast
cancer. It was a tough time. That however is not an excuse and I take full responsibility for it.
Looking at my grades after, it shows that I made a big improvement using my fast learning
skills as I learned how to manage my time more effectively and was able to master the English
language fast. I have learned a lot from that experience and it taught me to be responsible of my
own auctions.
Throughout my undergraduate degree in Finance at Portland State University, I have
gained many business skills. I gained experience from managing an online portfolio of stocks/
mutual funds, researching firms' international investing activities, valuation of companies
stocks, developing a marketing plan and many other important economic and business practices.
In addition, I learned other skills that include working with groups, being a team player,
solving problems as they arise and multitasking. Furthermore, my experience as an intern
in two Multinational corporations gave me exposure of how the real world works. My first
internship was at SABB (Saudi Arabian British Bank) an affiliate of the HSBC Group. Where
I worked as a customer service representative building good relations with clients, as well as
satisfying customer needs through resolution of problems and explanation of bank services.
Communication activities with customers and institution officials helped me build a strong self
confidence. My second internship was at the IT department of Aramco, the world's largest oil
company, where I helped in developing a contracts & invoices system. These mixed academic
and work experiences in addition to managing my own stocks portfolio taught me the difference
between academic and practitioners.
I plan to gain more experience to assist my capabilities, and the MBA Program at
Andreas School of Business will help me achieve that. Having an MBA from Barry University
is a privilege that not many people may enjoy. However, having the advantage of being able to
obtain it is a pleasure that one should make the most out of and I will use this privilege to better
myself and achieve great success in the banking and financial services industry, and specifically
in the investments profession. I wish to peruse an MBA because I want to enter the work world
having a higher advantage. An MBA along with a CFA certification that I plan to obtain after
my masters will help me face business challenges in a more educated view and to implement
effective solutions in the field of work as well as earning a globally recognized certification.
I believe that your MBA program with strengths in curriculum will broaden my horizon
and assist me attain my objectives not only by benefiting from the program top-notch professors
but also by interacting with fellow business students. I hope my background and experiences are
found suitable for admission to the MBA program at Barry University.
