In this way, the three Latin words, "Vires, Artes, Mores" set the cornerstones for what Florida State University was founded on. Three very different attributes come together to create the culture of higher learning. "Vires," "Artes," and "Mores" are all philosophies that strongly dictate my values."Vires" signifies moral strength. I believe that moral strength is a value that I possess. Throughout my life I've focused on putting others first in everything I do. By doing this I sometimes say and do things that others may not appreciate at the time, but is the right thing to do. For instance, I had a friend who I noticed was battling depression but refused to seek help. I approached him about the issue knowing it was an uncomfortable topic for him. I made sure to put his well-being before our friendship because I knew that his life was more important than how he felt about me at the time. Sometimes doing the right thing means making hard decisions and having the strength to follow through.Intellectual pursuits, as in art or craft, can be viewed in many ways. "Artes" is a value that I believe I show through being a good listener and a trustworthy person. These traits take a lot of practice and aren't easy to come by for everyone. It takes skill to be the type of person that anyone can trust and I believe that this is a quality I possess.All of these characteristics can be included in the concept of "Mores," or character. These three Latin words are embodied in Florida State University's philosophy because they all contribute to being a strong student and leader. I believe that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are but we are ultimately responsible for who we become. My being a part of Florida State University will add to these traits and help to strengthen my values.
