Hello, I am applying for an undergraduate degree at a university in Taiwan, majoring in informatics, and one of the requirements in the application is to write an autobiography in English. Please, help me review it. I would gladly appreciate any corrections, criticism, and/or advice/suggestions as I think this may need extending but like I said, I am open to any forms of correction. Thank you in advance! (Random alphabetical letters and numbers are placeholders for actual information to protect my personal privacy.)
Here is the essay draft:

My name is Monisochineath Sovan, and I recently graduated from XYZ in ABC, Cambodia. I grew up in a rapidly advancing digital landscape, where I have always been keen on how technology affects daily life. My curiosity is what drew me towards STEM, where I engage in complex critical thinking and solving problems logically. Throughout my secondary education, I have consistently pushed myself academically, balancing top marks in STEM subjects with active leadership in extracurriculars.
My passion for tech began at a young age. At age four, as I was watching my father navigate his laptop, it sparked me inquisitively, leading me to explore basic coding on Code.org in primary school and building my first HTML websites for both myself and school club projects by middle school. As I developed larger and more complex projects, including winning first place in the DMUC Tech Challenge 2026 by developing and pitching a fully functional website under pressure, my initial focus shifted. Writing code showed me how technological systems are built, but witnessing local news reports on widespread online scams in Cambodia during my senior year made me gain the realization that the ultimate challenge is to defend against those systems. I want to major in informatics to pivot deeply into cybersecurity, learning how to secure digital infrastructure and protect vulnerable digital environments from malicious threats.
Aside from software creation, I have actively demonstrated analytical and intercultural skills, competing in national and international mathematics competitions as well as earning both certificates in Cultures of ASEAN and Advanced Certificate in English from ACE, ensuring I can thrive in an international academic environment.
I am applying to 123 University because the Informatics program offers a solid groundwork and foundation I need to chase this path. In the future, I plan to become a cybersecurity specialist by working on the frontlines of digital defense to help organizations identify risks and secure their networks. Ultimately, I aim to be able to contribute to a safer technological landscape in both Cambodia and Southeast Asia, and I am confident 123 University is the dream place to begin this journey.

The reviewers do not believe any claims about interests starting at a very early age. Your mention of your interest developing at the age of 4 will not impress the reviewer. Instead, he will see this as an exaggeration and therefore, lose belief in everything else that you are saying in the essay. They normally accept the development of an interest starting at the age of 12 or 13, when the person already has the ability to understand and discern what he is seeing. Something that a 4 year only is not capable of doing yet.

This is supposed to be an autobiography. Therefore, it should represent your family background, academic background and achievements, as well as community involvement. Yet the only discussion existing here relates purely to your academic side. So this is not a very well developed written interview. You need to balance the information regarding the 3 areas I mentioned if you want this to be a really useful essay. Do it within the allowed maximum word count.

@Holt Thank you so much for the feedback. I have another question , how deep should I go with this in an autobiography? Since I'm limited on word count, I want to make sure I balance it correctly. Should I focus the family section more on the environment/values they provided that shaped my work ethic, or do reviewers want a brief look at my parents' background/influences? Do you have another advice on how to weave that in naturally without sounding like too generic as well as keeping it to standards unlike American essays, it would be super helpful. Thank you again in advance!

Balance the character building and educational support that you received from your parents. That way you will be able to show that your parents were early mentors in your life. It would help to place an extra focus on the parent who worked with tech and informatics or computers in general so that you can naturally relate it to your interest in the university major. Revising the essay in that manner will also help you to insert your parental background into the statement. It should be easier to do with a fully revised essay instead of a portion revised presentation. Sometimes revising only paragraphs ends up with a choppy and confusing discussion presentation. Forcing the revision of the succeeding paragraph presentations. Rewriting the whole essay would help you avoid that situation.
