Good morning/afternoon/evening,

I am currently an Ontario Grade 12 student applying to HKUST in Hong Kong, and I would like to see if there are any improvements I can make to my personal statement. I have 3 months to finalize my statement, as I would submit my application for early consideration. Thank you in advance, and have a wonderful day.

Below is the current (initial) version of my personal statement tailored for HKUST. Thank you again!

My fascination with computer engineering lies at the precise intersection between software development and physical hardware engineering. While writing code in school gave me the knowledge of logic, it was the desire to see that logic move physical objects and solve real-world problems that drove me into engineering. This passion has defined my academic choices in OSSD and my extracurricular pursuits in Toronto, shaping my goal of the Computer Engineering undergraduate program offered at HKUST.

My problem-solving skills are heavily supplemented by communication and critical thinking. Participating in the York Region Skills Challenge coding competition required me to critically evaluate the framework and implementation of my final solution under acute time pressure. However, I recognized that technical execution is only viable when it is accompanied by effective communication. As part of my high school's student ambassadors team, I have to transform my knowledge and experience of our high school into accessible information. One that can be easily understood by upcoming students and their families. It enables me to polish my communication skills as I adapt information dynamically for diverse audiences, which is indispensable for me to grow as a computer engineering student.

As an Executive of FIRST Robotics Competition Team 7603, I experienced firsthand the collaborative nature of modern engineering. Beyond optimizing our team's hardware, I actively contributed to the global WPILib open-source project by resolving a critical cross-platform compatibility bug. I diagnosed and fixed an encoding error that affected Linux users of the development suite, which will be deployed to computers on thousands of FRC teams worldwide in the 2027 season of the competition. Through navigating a massive, production-grade repository and deploying system-level fixes from this experience, I learned the importance of considering all edge cases that a project will have upon end users before publishing a new feature.

Beyond the lab, I have tested my technical skills in the real world. I am currently working as a co-op technician at a local technology repair store, sharpening my hardware diagnostic capabilities and allowing me to understand component-level architecture and system electronics. However, my most rewarding work has been volunteering as a repair technician for elderly residents in the Toronto community. While I assisted them with the issues they had encountered with their technology, it taught me that engineering is not just about building advanced systems; it is about accessibility, empathy, and creating technology that serves human needs.

HKUST stands out to me as a global hub for innovation, and the HKUST Robotics team allow me to further brush up my experience with robotics, allowing me to pave my way into becoming a professional engineer through postsecondary education. I look forward to enriching my knowledge through my hands-on technical experience, open-source mindset, and passion for community-driven technology in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Engineering.

It is important that you balance the academic reflection of who you are with your interests outside of school. This personal statement is your oral interview and your chance to tell the admissions committee things about you that may not be discussed in the other aspects of your application or application essays. They need to know that you are also an asset to the school in terms of your other non-academic intererests. The essay portrays you as a strong academic candidate. So that will definitely boost the interest in your paper. It would help if you mention how you placed in the competitions that you joined so that your credentials for consideration will be further heightened. Try to expand the discussion about HKUST so that it is not so brief at the end of the essay. You need to prove that you are familiar with the major you have chosen and how these align with your academic and professional interests. A different concluding paragraph can be written for this essay.
