I grew up in a third world country where a significant percentage of the population struggles financially and my family is no exception. as the prices of goods continue to rise, basic necessities are becoming increasingly unaffordable, leaving many families endless financial struggles. In such circumstances, financial literacy becomes essential to maintain stability. Witnessing these challenges first-hand showed me how difficult it is to support a family without proper financial planning and management.
When I was little, my family had difficulty making ends meet. My father used to run a small export-import business but it went bankrupt just before I was born. Although my father changed careers several times to support our family, our financial situation remained unstable. After I was born, however, my mother who had a degree in finance but had chosen to stay as a housewife stepped up and secured a job in the finance field. This was when financial responsibility became important to our household. My mother was very cautious about expenses and through careful financial planning, she managed to provide our household despite the limited resources. Eventually, my father stopped working and although we were never well-off, my mother's income became the primary source of support for our family . I remember that during my school days, most of my friends came from traditional families and I was the only one whose dad wasn't the breadwinner. Instead of being embarrassed, I was proud to tell them that my mother was the provider of the household. Although my father now works as a sortation operative in the United States to help fund my brother's university tuition fees who is also studying there, my mother's determination and courage to support the entire family without having to rely on the man of the house inspired me to grow into an independent and reliable woman like her. This aspiration, along with the realization of the impact that financial accountability can have first sparked my passion for accounting and management. Later, my mother introduced me to Excel and data entry and I decided to further my studies by attending an intermediate-level Excel class where I also learned some basic principles of finance. I also worked part-time as a receptionist at a Japanese language school, where I handled tasks such as student registration and inquiries. This experience helped me overcome my social anxiety, and strengthened my organization and time-management skills. Through both my mother's influence and these experiences, I discovered that I genuinely enjoy organizing and analyzing data, especially in ways that affect financial planning and decision making, which led me to pursue a diploma in Management Studies.
My aim at SIM is to immerse myself in the Management Studies program's thorough modules, which is designed to help students develop essential business and management skills, such as financing, accounting, and marketing. Among these areas, I am particularly interested in managerial accounting as it teaches how to analyze and interpret data to report the economic costs of business activities. I aim to develop strong accounting skills that will enable me to control budgets, forecast future outcomes and make sound decisions. After completing the diploma, I aim to pursue an undergraduate degree in Accounting to deepen my understanding in key concepts and techniques of accountancy while gaining practical experiences through projects and extracurricular activities. In addition to academics, I plan to actively participate in various business-related workshops, social events, and student organizations. These experiences will not only improve my soft skills and confidence but also expand my professional and social network. I look forward to interacting and forming connections with students from diverse backgrounds by engaging in events and group projects as I believe that collaborating with peers will enhance my academic journey and campus life.
