May 22, 2007 marked the day my life had changed. As the anesthesia wore off I woke up to a silent room and the smell of sanitation. I slowly gained the strength to open up my eyes and it occurred to me, I had been under for seven hours. Lying stiff in the cold hospital bed, I couldn't muster up the strength to move a muscle. I was in an unfamiliar place, nearly five hours away from my hometown. Two rods, forty bolts, and fifty staples held my spinal cord in place; along with that I had four broken ribs. My body in rare condition and it seemed as if I would never be back to normal.

The surgery affected me not only physically but also mentally; it was a meaningful event in my life that made me the strong person that I am today. As a prospective student I believe that I have what it takes to take on the overwhelming college life, just as I took on the overwhelming and life threatening surgery. The experience taught me a valuable lesson; I quickly came to realization that only I could help myself. When I sit back and think of having a future at the University of Florida I think of my accomplishment. I know that your prestigious school will be yet another factor in what I could do to better myself.

In addition, the decision I made to have the surgery forbid me from cheering for my high school the following year. Although cheerleading was my passion I knew that the sacrifice would be worth it in the end. One year later I urged myself to try out once again. Doctors warned me of the potential consequences but I tried out for the Varsity cheerleading team and made it. I was relieved to know that my hard work had paid off. Now I would love to have the chance to put all of my hard work into earning a degree at the University of Florida and i know that in the future it will pay off. Attending UF is my dream, just as having another chance to cheerlead was my dream. I didn't give up then and I will not give up now.

In conclusion, I believe that my accomplishment will affect my college experience because now I can relate to the saying that "hard work pays off." I am a survivor and I know that I have what it takes to survive as a student. I am looking forward to putting hard work into the years ahead at the University of Florida. Recently, I came to Gainesville to tour the campus. There was excitement everywhere as I walked down the crowded streets. I saw students who were campaigning and participating in fundraisers. I as well want to be involved in the campus community and be a part of the "Gator Nation."
