Factors That Contribute to Long Term Recovery

INTRODUCTION

Substance use disorder affects millions of people and families every year, which makes recovery a very important health issue. While lots of people are completing recovery programs, the problem comes in being able to maintain long term recovery. Researchers have found that achieving long term sobriety requires much more than just finishing a treatment program. In fact, Laudet, Savage, and Mahmood found that "most studies of recovery have focused on individuals with one to two years of abstinence" (306), which really highlights that there are a lot of unanswered questions about what factors contribute to decades of recovery. It also brings to light that recovery is not just obtained by a treatment program, but rather a whole bunch of ingredients that are going to be different for each person.

HISTORY OF THE PROBLEM

Early recovery efforts have focused mostly on helping people learn to abstain from using drugs and alcohol and just completing treatment programs. For a lot of years, the main goal seemed to be just staying abstinent and not using drugs and/or alcohol. Success seemed to be measured by people remaining abstinent only one to two years after completing a treatment program. One of the biggest gaps in research is that most of the studies are only focusing in on people one to two years after completion of drug and alcohol treatment programs, but more recent research has actually begun identifying factors that have contributed to longer recovery across many different aspects of someone's life.

EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM

It's been identified that completing a treatment program alone is not enough. The factors that have been identified after treatment that need to be addressed are challenges specifically different for each person. Finding and maintaining stable housing, finding and maintaining stable employment, managing finances, and learning how to build and/or rebuild healthy relationships are common struggles for most people after completing treatment. Being that addiction had disrupted any account of normalcy in life, all of these challenges are foreign to most. Learning how to navigate these challenges and how to just live life on life's terms is imperative in achieving long term recovery.
Research suggests that aftercare treatment plans and continued support well after the one to two years of completing a treatment program play a vital role in long term sobriety. McKay really gets into this, explaining that continued care services like counseling and peer support are what improve recovery outcomes because it gives the needed ongoing guidance after formal treatment has ended (McKay). Instead of looking at treatment as the finish line, it should be viewed as a milestone in an ongoing lifelong process. Coupled with aftercare, long term recovery requires constant personal growth and a willingness to keep adapting to life's constant changes. \

REPERCUSSIONS

When people complete treatment without an individualized aftercare support plan, there is a much greater risk of relapse. Recovery doesn't end just because treatment is completed, and without that continued guidance, people will struggle navigating life while trying to maintain sobriety. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, recovery is a long term process that often requires continuing care and support to maintain positive outcomes (National Institute on Drug Abuse). The consequences that come with relapse are damaged relationships, unemployment, legal problems, declining physical and mental health, and, in some cases, overdose or death. These outcomes are why long term recovery support is just as important as treatment. The effects of addiction and relapse don't just fall on one person. Families experience repeated cycles of hope, disappointment, financial strain, and emotional stress as they have to watch their loved ones struggle to maintain recovery. Communities are also affected because of increased healthcare costs, crime, and homelessness. Because addiction reaches way passed the person addicted, successful recovery benefits everyone.

BAND-AID SOLUTION

Since long term recovery means that many different things have to work together, improving access to treatment and aftercare can help strengthen a person's foundation for recovery. Widening the door to access evidence based treatment programs gives the person a chance to address the physical, emotional, and behavioral effects of substance use disorder. But the treatment should be viewed as the beginning of recovery and not the final destination. With that being said, continuing aftercare through counseling, peer support groups, and other community resources is what's going to help improve chances of longer recovery times. According to McKay, continuing care is what is associated with better recovery outcomes because it provides individuals with ongoing support after formal treatment has ended (McKay). These are the services that help people navigate the everyday life challenges of recovery while reducing the risk of relapse. Access to stable housing, employment assistance, transportation, mental health services, and recovery communities of their peers is what will allow people to focus on rebuilding their lives and not just living in survival mode.

LONG-TERM SOLUTION

Even though treatment and continued aftercare provide an important foundation for recovery, lasting sobriety actually requires a more specific, individualized approach that addresses each person's specific needs and circumstances. No two people experience addiction in the same way, so recovery programs should highlight individualized aftercare plans specific to them that consider everything from physical health, mental health, family relationships, employment, housing, and other barriers to maintaining recovery. As Laudet, Savage, and Mahmood suggest, long term recovery is influenced by many different factors rather than a single treatment approach (Laudet, Savage, and Mahmood).
Long term recovery programs should highlight the importance of continued support, healthy relationships, and stable living environments. Research has shown that these factors, coupled with ongoing counseling and continued community and peer support, significantly improve a person's ability to maintain long term recovery.

CONCLUSION

Long term recovery from substance use disorder needs so much more than just completing a treatment program. Throughout this research, I found that personalized aftercare plans, learning how to build and rebuild healthy relationships, stable living environments, and continued support all play a very important role in helping people sustain recovery over the long term. Recovery should be viewed as a lifelong process and not an actual destination because every stage of recovery comes with new challenges that need continuous growth and adaptation.
Although treatment programs provide an essential foundation, lasting recovery depends on addressing the various factors that influence a person's life every single day after treatment is completed. Widening the recovery efforts to go way past treatment by highlighting the importance of personalized aftercare support, stable housing, employment etc, is what's going to improve a person's chances for long term recovery. By understanding that recovery is a life long process and not just a single event, treatment providers and communities will be able to better support the people working toward long term recovery.

I noticed that the paper seemed to written I a rushed manner. It is almost as if you were hurrying to get your thoughts down onto the screen before you forgot the information. Try to take a more relaxed approach to writing. That way your information will be better explained and understood by the reader.

Next, the word choices. There are times when the words that were used are too juvenile for such a topic or does not really apply to the idea being presented This type of paper requires more specialized term usage and examples to support the claims being made. Yes, that is important even when writing a proposal paper. These would help convince the professor to approve your subject focus.

Finally, the long term recovery discussion could be improved by discussing some of the long term programs that have been successful and unsuccessful prior to your personal insight presentation. This would show that you have done ample comparisons between the two before arriving at your final insight.
