The Government Should Provide Healthcare to the Less Fortunate
Throughout the years, healthcare is been a major issue in the society in the United States. One issue concerning healthcare is that its very expensive and more than 52 million people do not have any coverage or they have less adequate coverage (Heer, 2009, p, 82). In addition, it is very important for people to have coverage for general healthcare maintenance and just in case something drastic occurs, in their life. There is a large percentage of American's that live without any form of healthcare insurance or have a very little. The lack of healthcare is one of the greatest social inequities of our social society. Due to the bad economy the government should provide healthcare for students and the under insurance Americans. The majority, but not all are low income adults, poor and college students also do not have any healthcare as well. Believe it or not, some of the uninsured are working citizens who cannot afford health coverage.
There are several problems within Americas economy that citizens face on a daily bases. The United States economy remains one of the most influential economies in the world. Economic problems faced by the U.S. are the results of economic mismanagement at different levels. Within the past few years, there has been big decrease in employment in the United States. In a society such as the United States it is very disturbing that the government cannot provide what should be a basic human right. A major problem is that the government has shown little effort on reducing the poverty level, and it has not been on the agenda to fix this problem, the U.S. tends to ignore this issue. A person income should not determine whether or not a person should have access to qualify for healthcare, while the person that is least fortunate suffers from an illness. Healthcare premiums have doubled in the past year, rising 3.7 percent faster than wages in the last few years, and co-pays and deductibles have increased as well (Heer, 2009, p. 82). There are many insurance policies that only cover a certain amount of visits to a doctor or hospital that a person can use.
People that are mostly affected by not having healthcare are under privilege d families and individuals, college students and even some people that are employed. Poverty is a big factor on why a person is able to afford healthcare. Living in poverty can lead to a state of deprivation and insecurity. A major issues is that people in America live beneath the poverty level and do not have healthcare. College students find themselves without coverage because they are no longer covered under their parents insurance. Some universities offer minimal care through the on campus health care office. Many employers do not offer health insurance to workers because it is too costly.
Healthcare in the United States is very expensive and its important to have coverage before there is a drastic situation that could occurs. Prescription drugs are very costly. Many Americans must choose between paying for medication or paying bills and montoring their basic needs. Today, it is estimated that more than 35 million Americans and about 14 percent of the population live in poverty (Radstone, 2005, p. 110). Poverty is such an complicated social phenomenon. People believe that the poor cause their own poverty, based on the notion that anyone should be able to work and make a living according to the "America Dream" . In my opinion, I feel that in some cases poverty can be passed on from generation to generation, which makes the poor feel powerless and negative. General barriers to health, employment and other basic needs are transferred to youth; the cycle continues. These same poor families are experiencing a cycle of chronic illness due to lack of adacjuate healthcare. The real reason on why poverty has such a huge impact on our society is the lack of education and not having success on finding good job opportunities and health management. Education plays such a big role, when it comes to getting a good job, a person learning skills, and being able to live your life at a comfortable level. A person that does not receive a proper education has a very slim chance of getting a good paying job and receiving health benefits. By not having an education, it could bring a person finical status down to poverty levels.
The poor and college students are affected in many ways by not having healthcare. If a person does not have the health insurance, which could mean that they will visit the doctor less frequently then the average person with health insurance. If a person who has health insurance was diagnosed at an early stage of their life threatening condition, they would have a better chance on surviving than a person with no health insurance. The lack of health insurance can really discourage a person from seeking the proper treatment for their medical condition .
