Grandmother taught me to read - the grammar in this short essay?

My grandmother taught me how to read at a young age. Ever since, I've loved to read. To me reading is more than just learning, it is also an escape. I read whenever I need a break from the world and all its problems. The words of the authors give me a new world for me to delve myself into and for a few hours I am alone with myself. Yet I also read to learn and understand. Reading offers gives us the power to learn things that we might never have imagined. For example, when would I have imagined that our 100 light-year-long galaxy is no more than a tiny spec in the universe? Yet thanks to Carl Sagan I was able to learn that fact and many more facts and ideas. To me all books are portals of the past to help us be better in the future.
