Graduate / KGSP Graduate 2017 - Letter of Self-Introduction - Education: to learn and to share [3]
Hi! I'm Merysa from Jambi, Indonesia. I am applying for KGSP graduate and write my first self-introduction, please help me with your comments, Thanks.
I love studying. I have always loved learning new things I didn't know before. My love on education and learning always makes me hunger to feel proud when people asking me of the things I know and the happiness after I found the answer of something I don't know before. I grew up in a middle class family lived in a town called Jambi in Indonesia. During my studies from elementary to university, I have always been interested in many things. I was on top positions in elementary school, which help me to continue to one of the best school in my city. I also got to spent only two years in junior high school in acceleration program. Outside school, I was also active as a member of Buddhist youth organization in temple in my city. As part of my interest, I was occupied in activities related to art and education such as making wall magazine and teaching in Sunday school. In my neighborhood, I often help kids around my house to ask some subjects they don't understand at school.
As my high passion to learn many things, I put my interests into some area. I learned Chinese and English in senior high school, and then met Korean culture through K-pop and Korean drama. I was amazed and continuously interested to the any topics about the ginger country. It encouraged me to learn Korean language and culture. Moreover, when I have no way to fly to Korea, I become more interested in technology especially internet and computer use to fulfill my curiosity of the actors, singers, and also the recent events in K-pop World. I started to make good use of internet, I learned many things that I actually can learn by myself from internet, and grow my interest into media and technology.
Continuing my study to university, I decided to not leaving the city because of my family economic condition and continued my study in English Education major in Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Jambi University for my interest in language and education. At this stage I have grown a big interest in language learning. I learned the nature of language, How English as the foreign language, is acquired and how to teach English theoretically and practically. Beside that I also learned the teaching method and some educational background theory for teaching practice. I also got the chance to use the knowledge and match it to the reality when I am teaching English as a Foreign Language to the class. I could see how the power of language and language teaching theory impact the English Teaching in my place. I become more interested in learning how a student acquire the language differently in different situation, how each student can use the language skills, how the teachers make use of the learning theory and how the curriculum designers work to made the class acquired the competencies targeted. At the same time, I started to teach private course for elementary students in English as a part time job from the second year. In the temple, I keep involved in Sunday school operational teaching. While teaching and preparing the teaching material, I always looked up for a better media and instructional design to improve my teaching. I often look up on the internet and application from my smart phones to help my students become more motivated to learn, especially English as a foreign language.
I intend to continue my master study in the Instructional Technology &Curriculum Major in Kookmin University, South Korea. Being one of the leading countries in technology development, South Korea has always impressed me with the development of the technology in the country, yet the education system that can walk in the same pace to the high development of the technology. The good system in education cannot be separated from a good curriculum design that matched with the students' need and condition. Hence, there is no doubt that this country is the best country to study the instructional technology and curriculum. The educators, teaching practitioners, instructional designer, teachers, and all school elements that develop as the technology and the globalization goes on that creates a better and always improving education system.
As we all know, advancements in technology are changing education at all points on the spectrum, from kindergarten all the way to the doctoral level, and dedicated educational technology jobs are popping up to help institutions make better use of the emerging resources. As a student who is always keen to learn about something, advanced technology has given me many benefits while I was studying as a student, and also after I apply my teaching practice. These benefits have motivated me to learn more and make good use of internet to develop teaching instruction that I have learned from my previous study. I want to deepen my knowledge in applying the technology to improve the students learning to reach a better learning experience, especially in English. Moreover, there are still a few education practitioners who pay their attention to involve the technology development for improving curriculum and teaching media in my city. Hence, I am motivated to learn more and put an extra focus to the area and get the experiences of curriculum and instructional design in South Korea which will really have an impact to Indonesian education in the future.
