Graduate / Review my Essay for Msc in Data Science from LMU and suggest any changes [3]

Essay "Data Science"

(in which you look at the developments and perspectives of Data Science as well as your planned area of specialisation, and your previous experience)

It is estimated that the world population will reach 9.3 billion by the year 2050 from the current population which is 7.8 billion. It is projected by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that the growth of agriculture needs to be increased by 70% to serve the projected demand ("The Future of Agriculture", 2016). Hence there is a lot of need to increase the production of the crops with limited available resources such as land, water and fertilizer to provide the needs of the increasing population.

Modern technology has made it possible to collect data of soil, water, and minerals from farms, and store them in a centralized system, popularly known as the Internet of Things. The data collected can be used by the data scientists in order help the agricultural industry to increase the productivity of the crops. The first time I was introduced to the term data science was during the Intel workshop in my college in my 7th semester, it was on data science and its various applications used in different sectors of the economy like in the agricultural field. It was quite a brief encounter but it caught my attention. Subsequently, learning how Data science is able to help the agriculture industry in so many ways like weather prediction, fertilizers recommendation, disease detection and pest management or Automated Irrigation system in order to increase the productivity of the crops inspired me and made me realize the need to leverage data science in the agricultural industry in order to meet the demand of growth in agricultural industry for the increasing population. My carrier goal is to work for an organization which is agriculture specific and in that I want to do something good in agricultural field with my data science skills so that farmers across the world could benefit from my work. This is why I have chosen to apply Master's in Data science program at LMU.

To be honest I took computer science engineering just because there was a trend that computer science graduates get a good salary. In India there is a saying among the students preparing for IIT JEE that "IIT chale jao uske baad life set hai" which means that once you get into an IIT life is excellent and you don't need to do anything after that. So I guess I took that saying way too seriously and when I came to college I was very less motivated to study. So I did not used to study at all made a bunch of friends who just used to party and do absolute nothing and during exams I used to study just to get pass. Now when I think about that time I think that were the worst two years of my life when I did nothing productive. No one at that time used to respect me whether it's other students whether it's the professor, No one! My OGPA till 4th semester was 6.84. My confidence was shattered at that point, I used to think that will I be able to change my life or not, but I decided that I cannot live my life that way and I decided to change my life. I then started studying very hard in my college like really hard. In mid semester exam in Software engineering subject I got highest marks in my class that were 48 out of 60. That was a very big achievement for me. My confidence sky rocketed and I keep studying ever harder. That semester I got 9.84 GPA and I came first in my class. I went to the washroom and looked into the mirror and said to myself that I am proud of you. I had tears in my eyes at that point. After 5th semester I learned a lifelong lesson that everyone should keep on learning throughout their entire life and this can be seen through my performance from 5th semester onwards. I have an OGPA of 9.12 in the last six semesters and have an overall OGPA of 8.15.

In 6th semester I independently learned competitive coding, object-oriented programming concepts, algorithms and analysis and got a summer internship in Samsung R&D Bangalore during campus recruitment. When the mid semesters got over I went to my father's village just to meet my cousins and all. There I got to know that farmers were not cultivating crops according to the maximum productivity because of the problems like unpredictability of weather, choosing optimal fertilizers, diseases and pest control. I really felt very bad for those people. Then I started learning about what all can be done in the field of agriculture with the help of Machine learning and Data science. And learning how Data science is able to help the agriculture industry in so many ways like weather prediction, fertilizers recommendation, disease detection and pest management or Automated Irrigation system in order to increase the productivity of the crops inspired me and made me realize the need to leverage data science in the agricultural industry. So I came to college and talked about this with my professor and he suggested me what all I can do. So, I started doing my research in the agriculture field and published few research papers.

I have been working under Dr. Dharavath Ramesh in the field of agriculture and my work led to few research papers like 'Crop yield prediction using aggregated rainfall-based modular artificial neural networks and support vector regression' published in Environment, Development and Sustainability Journal , 'Biodegradation of pesticides using density-based clustering on cotton crop affected by Xanthomonas malvacearum' published in Environment, Development and Sustainability Journal, 'Seasonal ARIMA to Forecast Fruits and Vegetable Agricultural Prices' published in 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Smart Electronic Systems (iSES), 'Crop prediction on the region belts of India: a Naïve Bayes MapReduce precision agricultural model' published in 2018 international conference on advances in computing, communications and informatics (ICACCI). I have also been working on some other Machine learning and Database related project which led to other research papers like 'Inclusion of e-commerce workflow with NoSQL DBMS: MongoDB document store' published in 2016 IEEE international conference on computational intelligence and computing research (ICCIC), 'RNNs-RT: Flood based Prediction of Human and Animal deaths in Bihar using Recurrent Neural Networks and Regression Techniques' published in Procedia computer science volume 132 and 'Phase classification of chronic myeloid leukemia using convolution neural networks' published in 2018 4th International Conference on Recent Advances in Information Technology (RAIT)

I also worked on predicting the sales of products for a certain country for next month in ZS data science challenge 2018 and achieved all India rank of 29. I have also undertaken verified course and certification for various courses on coursera like IBM Data Science Professional, How to Win a Data Science competition and Machine Learning course by Andrew Ng. These courses really helped me a lot in developing my data science and Machine Learning skills. In Samsung Bangalore internship I did data science related project in which I predicted temperature of the phone in order to achieve sustained performance of the mobile phone. Currently I am in Samsung Noida and have worked on android project named 'Auto MyTV' app which has been released in play store. At the same time I keep working on projects related to data science.

I am excited about the opportunities presented by the Data Science Institute at LMU that will help me acquire the requisite skills to establish myself in the data science field and eventually emerge as an industry leader. Modules such as Inference and Sampling, Knowledge Discovery and Big Data Management, Fundamentals of Data Science, Human Computation and Analytics, Predictive Modelling and Data Ethics and Data Security. Will expand my academic horizons and help me in using the available data precisely. After graduating from LMU, My short term career goal is to work in some data science industry so that I could gain more experience in this field and become a data scientist, For the long term goal I want to join an organization which is agriculture specific and in that I want to do something good in agricultural field with my data science skills so that farmers across the world could benefit from my work.

I look forward to gaining a competitive edge by deepening my understanding of various statistical and analytical techniques and upgrading my technical skills through the well-structured curriculum at LMU. LMU is one of the top-ranking schools for Computer Science and Statistics and it will be my privilege to study at such a prestigious institute. Learning through interaction with the renounced faculty, industry leaders, and data science peers will add to the exciting experience of graduating from LMU. I am positive that the course structure, curriculum and the real-world approach during the MSc Data Science program offered at LMU will play a decisive role in my life, both as a student and as a professional.
