Graduate / Latest career-related goals and study area for the scholarship [2]
Dear Friends,
I am applying for a scholarship program that is funded by the US government. I need some suggestions for my essay.
This essay should be covered why I want to study this area, my latest career activities and goals, and how this area of study is going to influence my country's development in the future. Please feel free to suggest any comments.
Urban Planning is one of the most challenging sectors in HHH which generates a large number of problems such as skyrocketing housing prices, informal settlements expansion, water shortage, poor waste management system, etc. Without having a comprehensive long-term urban development plan, the development process is going nowhere as cities are home to economic development, educational opportunity, cultural center, and a key contributor to climate change. Therefore, I want to expand my knowledge in this area and learn urban planning theories and practices from the US's urban planning system.
I started working from the associate level to reach the consultant (technical support) level in this area within 6 years with different organizations in HHH. This allows me to understand contemporary urban challenges that HHH's cities have been facing and how the government has a limited capacity to meet needs. During my time with HFHM, I witnessed the poor housing conditions in the Bago region and the vulnerable living conditions of YYY's informal settlements. One vivid memory of what I had during a field visit to one of the villages in Bago was there was limited space in the house to sleep for all family members in the rainy season as the palm leave roof could not resist heavy rain, so they had to sleep very tight with an uncomfortable position like sitting if it rained in the night time. This inspired my interest in my long-term career to work on addressing housing rights and promoting affordable housing in HHH.
However, my experience with SKLMMK International as a National Program Coordinator and a Junior Project Manager at DDDEE elevated my knowledge in the urban planning sector. Primarily, I thought providing housing is enough for the people, yet an adequate living condition defined by the UN's International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights is broader than providing a house to live in as it should be seen as the right to live somewhere in security, peace, and dignity, and the right to access urban services. Therefore, I want to extend my knowledge in the areas of sustainable urban development planning for unstable political countries to provide basic urban services and humanitarian assistance for the urban poor. Based on the currently forced evictions and ever-existing urban inequality in HHH, I want to study urban and regional planning major in the United State.
Upon my immediate return, I want to secure a job at the UN Agencies or international organizations is my short-term goal. I will choose to work on slum improvement projects in YYY which are going to be water and sanitation, waste management, housing development, and road network improvement to provide equitable urban services to YYY's slums. My short-term goal is to work with the Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement where these ministries will be creating resettlement programs with the support of the national government for internal migrants and refugees whose lives have been impacted by the civil war once HHH's democracy restore. I believe the program will provide socioeconomic opportunities along with an adequate living standard which includes access to cities, housing, urban services, health care, education, and employment when they are being relocated to a host city. In the long term, I will be raising my voice to fight for urban equality, secure housing rights for all citizens, and inclusive urban planning. To achieve these goals, I would like to study higher education at a prestigious university in the United State with the support of the FFF Scholarship.
