Scholarship / Many educational obstacles - Chevening leadership essay [2]

Please if you can review this essay it means a lot to me.

I consider myself fortunate to have attended school despite facing many educational obstacles, an opportunity some of my older siblings did not have. My father worked as a landscaper and sometimes took me to water the gardens he tended, which sparked my interest in plants and irrigation. When I started attending university, I depended on my father financially but then the pandemic came, I lost his support. Instead of giving up, I started working on freelance marketplaces and collaborating with both online platforms and local startups to cover my tuition.

One of my successful ventures into the tech sector was becoming the co-founder Rise Solutions, a digital agency dedicated to providing technology strategies and solutions. I organized and guided teams to develop technology projects, including a prototype irrigation robot that uses soil moisture sensors to trigger watering, addressing local agricultural challenges. Leading these projects honed my ability to coordinate teams, solve complex problems, and transform ideas into tangible solutions.

Another example of my leadership was a humanitarian hackathon held at the Mogadishu Tech Summit, Somalia's largest digital event, in 2021. I led a team of engineers to develop the "Drought Response" app, which allows people to not only donate money but also essential supplies such as water, clothing, food, and household items to drought-affected communities. I plan to further develop this app during my Chevening Scholarship. These experiences have reinforced my belief that leadership is not just about guiding projects, but also about developing teams and creating opportunities for others.

Scholarship / Diverse social networks - Chevening Relationship building and influence [2]

Anyword on this?
Tell us about a professional relationship you have built and maintained. In your answer, please address:
How was the relationship formed, and what made it important?
What did you contribute to this relationship, and what did you gain?
How have you sustained or developed this relationship over time?
How will these skills help you build connections within the Chevening community and beyond?
You must enter a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words. (0 words entered)

I have carefully cultivated diverse social networks from my university days to my professional roles, which have shaped my development as a passionate advocate for tech-driven social impact. Using one of my freelancer channels, I worked with several coding and tech schools, running online surveys during bi-weekly mentorship sessions to assess students' familiarity with job searching and freelancing. One notable example is Rise Academy, where I mentored young developers. Although students were technically skilled, they struggled to apply their knowledge professionally. In response, I developed a four-week freelancing course, delivering short lessons, practical assignments, and portfolio clinics. The course teaches portfolio building, client outreach, pricing, and project management. Rise Academy and other schools, including Digital Shelter and Mire International School, have incorporated the course into their curricula, helping students earn online and navigate the professional tech landscape.

I maintained relationships with other notable stakeholders in the tech industry, including iRisehub Somalia's first innovation hub center. Before joining iRiseHub, I had the opportunity to meet the team at the Mogadishu Tech Summit. During our discussions, I learned about their challenges with social media engagement and visibility for the summit. I proposed a solution: integrating an advanced intelligence tool to streamline and enhance their content posting, thereby boosting the company's online presence and community engagement from 8,000 to 40,000. Managing these tasks effectively showcased my potential and directly led to a paid internship at iRiseHub, where I later became Chief Technical Officer. In that role, I provided leadership in transitioning from on-premise applications to cloud-based solutions, while coordinating projects ranging from startup support through Dalbile to high-level national events at Minbar Initiative .

Scholarship / Study plan research laboratory of Land Improvement and Management [4]

Hello there, I already contact my professor and got a position but need to submit Mext Scholarship through him and my study/career plan is one of the things that could get me choosen. Please I run out of words or what to say anymore. everythin is separate but i merged them here:

Present field of study, Your research topic in Japan and Study program in Japan

I studied Computer Science at the University of xxxxxxxxx and finished my BSc in 2022. My time at university shaped both my technical foundation and how I think about technology as a tool for solving real problems. My interest in agriculture started when I worked on a small irrigation prototype for dry regions. I want to join the laboratory of Land Improvement and Management at xxxxxxxxxx University because the lab works on irrigation systems and environmental engineering for agriculture. This matches my interest in using technology to improve water use for small farmers. Professor xxxxxxxx's work on irrigation control and field data fits the direction I want to follow.

My topic is a Data Driven Smart Irrigation System for Small Scale Farmers in Semi Arid Regions.
I want to build an irrigation model that uses soil moisture sensors, weather data and crop conditions to guide water use. I will test machine learning models to predict water needs and control irrigation timing. My aim is to save water, lower costs and increase yield for farms that face drought.

My plan is to join the Laboratory of Land Improvement and Management at xxxxxxxxx University under Professor xxxxxxx. I want to improve my smart irrigation system by testing it in Japanese research environments and collecting data for better AI predictions. I hopeto develop a system that can be used in areas with water shortage like Somalia.

Methods
-Set up soil moisture and weather sensors on test plots.
-Build a mobile monitoring unit that records and sends data.
-Train machine learning models with field data.
-Compare automated irrigation with manual irrigation on the same plots.

Expected outcomes and SDGs
-Lower water use and higher crop yield.
-A practical model for farms in dry regions.
-Support for SDG 2, SDG 6 and SDG 12 through efficient water use and sustainable production.

al

My immediate goal is to continue as Chief Technology Officer at xxxxhub, xxxxxxx's first innovation hub. I will use the sensor analytics, model tuning, and field trial methods learned in Japan. I aim to run five pilot sites, train ten local technicians, and demonstrate 10-20% water savings on pilot plots. I will form partnerships with Japanese research groups and NGOs to share knowledge and run joint trials. Research results will be turned into simple technical guides and policy briefs for local stakeholders and government agencies so the technology moves from lab to field.

Within the next few years, I hope to become Deputy Director at xxxxxHub, responsible for innovation and operations. I will build an applied research unit that connects field data with practical solutions. I plan to work with international organizations like WFP or FAO and with Japanese research partners for joint trials. Paid maintenance and advisory services will be set up to support farmers and sustain the work.

In the longer term, I want to become an expert in drought-resilient irrigation systems. I will help growxxxxHub or xxxx Solutions xxxxxxx into a center for applied research, technology transfer, and training. My targets include reaching thousands of farmers, improving crop yields where the system is used, and supporting national policy adoption for climate-smart irrigation.

Scholarship / Study plan research laboratory of Land Improvement and Management [4]

I understand. you are right 100% and I appreciate your comment I have been editing for the past 6 hours and this is what I came up with. can you also rate my career plan that's what I am so afraid off it feels a bit off.

Proposed study program in Japan (Outline your field of study on this side and the specific of your study program on the reverse side of this sheet. This section is one of the most important references for selection. The statement must be typewritten or written in block letters. Additional sheets of paper may be attached if necessary. If plagiarism or fraud is discovered after selection, the selection will be cancelled retroactively.)
If you have Japanese language ability, write in Japanese. (相当の日本語能力を有する者は,日本語により記入すること。)

 1 Present field of study(現在の専攻分野)

I completed a BSc in Computer Science at the University of Somalia in 2022. My work focused on data analysis, programming, and basic machine learning. I developed an interest in irrigation and soil monitoring after building a simple prototype for dry regions(attaching the prototype link here). My current field of study is the use of data systems for agricultural water management. I want to study how sensors, field data, and control models support irrigation planning in semi arid environments. This matches the research at the Laboratory of Land Improvement and Management at Hokkaido University. The lab studies irrigation control, soil conditions, and water use efficiency, which aligns with the direction I want to follow.

2 Your research topic in Japan: Describe articulately the research you wish to carry out in Japan.
(渡日後の研究テーマ:日本においてどういった研究がしたいかを明確に記入すること)

My proposed research topic is Data Driven Irrigation Control for Small Farms in Semi Arid Regions.
I plan to design a model that uses soil moisture data, weather information, and crop conditions to guide irrigation timing. I will test machine learning models to estimate daily water needs and adjust irrigation schedules. The goal is to reduce water waste, keep stable crop growth, and help farmers in drought prone areas plan irrigation with confidence.

3 Study program in Japan: (Describe in detail and with specifics - particularly concerning the ultimate goal(s) of your research in Japan)
(研究計画:詳細かつ具体に記入し、特に研究の最終目標について具体的に記入すること。)

I will investigate how sensor networks and field data improve irrigation decisions. My research plan has three parts:

-Install soil moisture and weather sensors on test plots at Hokkaido University.
-Collect data on soil type, crop growth, and water use across different conditions.
-Train machine learning models and compare automated irrigation with manual irrigation on the same plots.

The study will examine how soil type, sensor placement, and model selection influence accuracy. I aim to produce an irrigation control model that fits small farms with limited resources. The final goal is a system that improves water use, lowers field stress, and keeps stable yield in semi arid regions.

I plan to use the field testing areas, soil labs, and data facilities at Hokkaido University. I hope to work under Professor Yamamoto's group because their research in irrigation control matches this topic. The research outcomes will help expand the university's work on sustainable water management and provide field data for future studies.
