Letters / Letter of Motivation for Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) [2]

Letter of Motivation
Dear Admission Committee,

I am writing to express my interest in applying for the Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg (FH Salzburg). With a computer science background and experience working in user experience (UX) design, I have built a strong foundation in user-centered design (UCD). I am interested in exploring further advanced technology.

My interest in using technology to solve real-life problems grew significantly during my undergraduate education, primarily through the thesis project I worked on. To further hone my skills, I have been practicing UI/UX Design both as an intern and as a junior UI/UX Designer, where I was allowed to work on some projects for impaired users. Through these projects, I gained insight into the accessibility issues related to technology and thus gained confidence in my desire to develop sustainable and accessible digital solutions. It triggered my curiosity about the application of interaction design in emerging technologies. Interaction design is the key to making these technologies functional, understandable, and friendly for users. Emerging technologies can become unfeasible or too complicated to use without proper interaction design. I have learned that designing intuitive, inclusive, and user-centered interactions is essential, especially when you are designing for people with disabilities. By focusing on interaction design in new technology, I am confident I can create solutions that improve the quality of life for diverse user communities.

While working on these projects, I showed competence in understanding users through user research to determine their goals and problems. I developed comprehensive personas, tested usability, and created wireframes and prototypes to refine design solutions. In addition, I worked closely with teams from different departments to guarantee that the product satisfies both user needs and business objectives. Working through the UX process, from research to testing, has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of how user-centered design (UCD) can deliver effective and essential solutions. I am eager to bring this to the University of Salzburg.

The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) curriculum will provide me with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience alongside research methodologies. I want to build on my strengths in critical fields like human factors and cognitive psychology to understand how people use technology. These skills will add value to my existing knowledge of UX design and help me design more friendly and accessible digital products. I am also passionate about accessibility and making sure that all the technologies I develop are accessible to people with all kinds of disabilities. Furthermore, I am excited to further my learning in interaction design for new technologies such as AR, VR, and AI to design unique user experiences.

What makes me different is a commitment to using technology to address significant problems affecting Africa. This commitment makes me want to return to my country after graduation and contribute my best away from classwork. I plan on using technology to solve healthcare, education, and entertainment challenges. The knowledge I acquire will enable me to create intuitive and accessible digital products, such as AI-powered learning tools and assistive technologies, to bridge educational gaps among students with disabilities and to develop systems for improving healthcare service delivery in under-resourced communities.

The Human-Computer Interaction programme at FH Salzburg is a unique and forward-thinking program that combines technical expertise with design thinking and a focus on human needs. Its interdisciplinary curriculum, emphasis on emerging technologies, and strong industry connections match my professional objectives. I am eager to learn from respected professors such as Manfred Tscheligi and work alongside peers who share my passion for HCI.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be taught by the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg (FH Salzburg)'s famous scholarly academic instructors. Their experience and advice will be very helpful to me as I start this journey.
